It's all very murky, but to try to condense it as simple as possible
1. Bashar al-Assad is like what would have happened if one of Saddam's sons had been able to take over. He's more modern simply by virtue of being younger, though still a dictator willing to use force.
2. Like Saddam, Bashar's regime is a minority regime. He is an Alawite Muslim, and his regime tends to be Alawite dominated, while Syria is Sunni majority, similar to how Saddam's Iraq was Sunni run in a Shiite majority country.
3. It's generally understood that Bashar's regime is the one that started this. But in this case, the opposition army seems to have quite a few shady people in its ranks, and their links to terrorists are not quite known.
4. Western media outlets tend to universally paint these people as freedom fighters, and while their foe definitely employs wicked tactics, it is clear that they are willing to stoop to very ignoble tactics themselves.
