Revolutions usually degenerate to such things due to our simiesque nature of fighting to a bloody death. Syria's case is a typical one of evil vs. lesser evil. Which one is which is up to interpretation.
If support comes from Syria from the western world it won't be because a side consists of the good guys and the other of the bad guys. There isn't friendship among nations, there are interests. The western world didn't want a string of Russia- and China-oriented governments extending all the way to the Mediterranean so they have been systematically replacing them with "democracies" so there you have the future outcome of this story.
