Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Patent Reveals Wii U GamePad Acts Like A Second TV Screen For Multiplayer Games

Nintendo patent reveals that Wii U multiplayer games can take place on two separate screens – the television and the Wii U GamePad. For example, in a two-player game, one player points a Wii Remote toward the television screen while the other points at the Wii U GamePad’s screen with another Wii Remote. As shown in the image above, both screens don’t have to be next to each other and players can be facing opposite directions.

That's actually pretty cool.

My hope is that the next 3D Mario platformer allows for simultaneous co-op play. Imagine being able to have 1 player being mario on the tv and the 2nd player could be luigi with the tablet controller acting as his screen.

I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!

Unless you can connect the controller to a secondary TV to display what happens on its screen, this is more an idea or a concept rather than something that could be used.

The 6" screen of the controller is too small for that, and most of the time you'll find with the wiimote pointing outside of the screen.

As i said, it's a nice idea, just not something practical.

Cool idea if they could make it work!!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

You point to the sensor bar, not the TV
and you can get as close as you want to the screen

It would be great if we were able to hook the thing up to a tv   but even if not I think this will be used and it will work. I mean why would Nintendo add a sensor bar on the top of the tablet if it wouldn't work.  Would just make it more expensive without any reason.

(last year they revealed that the black "bar"  around the  front camera is the sensor bar.)

using a screen as a screen, innovation at its finest!

@DieAppleDie and JazzB1987:

Yes, I know that WiiU's Gamepad has a build in sensor bar, and that it's that thing what the wiimote uses to know its position.

But the screen is very small! You would need to play really close to the screen and with small movements of the wiimote.

What happens in a Wii game where the wiimote also controls the camera? That if, for whatever reason, you move your hand too much to one side, the camera will move when you don't want it, and you will have to go back to the other side to compensate. Now think of that but on a 6" screen and a sensor bar that is so small that the 2 points from which the wiimote gets its position are very close.

It will be madness!

You can patent something like that?

Like other said, great concept, but not very practical.
