Forums - Gaming - Epic Says Next-Gen Graphics Leap Like ‘Batman Going From Adam West To Dark Knight Rises’

@ superchunk

You are quickly showing how little you know about actual tech.

If you think the Luminous demo from a tech standpoint isnt a huge leap over what we currently have then quite frankly you dont know what your looking at.

Next gen will easily be as big of a jump as this current gen was tech wise. I mean the current consoles dont even render games in native 1080p for gods sakes

I don't see a video? o.O

I always thought it was PC/WiiU only hmm...

Sorry, I gave you the wrong link. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4716862

Disgusting!!

:3

@Ben. I have personally seen the luminous demo, and listened to interviews about what UE4 brings to the table, and as impressive as it is, it is not a PS2 to PS3 jump, let alone a PS2 to WiiU jump.

X720 and Orbis will be very good, but will not be the PS2 to PS3 jump some are expecting, imho.

I think there is one part of the analogy that is particularly apt ... the cost

Graphics on PS2, XBox and Gamecube games could (roughly) be associated with the portrayal of Batman in the Adam West series; graphics on XBox 360 and PS3 games could be compared to Michael Keaton's Batman; and a generational leap may lead to The Dark Knight Rises Batman.

The budget of the 1966 Batman was $1,400,000 Million (roughly $10 million with inflation), the Tim Burton Batman cost $35,000,000 (roughly $60 million with inflation), and The Dark Knight Rises cost $250,000,000.

@happydolphin

Yes it is the real time and dynamic lighting alone in luminous would completly fry the current consoles.

I think your confusing "good looking" and actual tech. The tech behind Unreal Engine 4 and Luminous are easily as big of a jump.

Yeah, I agree that the tech is impressive, but how much of that will be perceived by the unsuspecting eye?

If Blue-ray struggled to capture the interest of the masses, why would luminous or UE4 as compared to previous implementations.

imho we've come to a point where these things will be super impressive, but it will be more and more difficult to please the human eye, and many changes will only be perceived by the most inspecting consumers.

My opinion though, and I agree I could be wrong. The Project Cars game looks absolutely incredible, fair. But that will be available on the WiiU, who knows how faithfully? We will see in a few months but I wouldn't be too surprised to see the WiiU handle it quite nicely. That would mean that we're getting to the point of photo-realism with just a little jump above the already very impressive HD twins (TLoU would say).

@above: We are nowhere near photorealism...And no game on the current consoles is even remotely close. Not even PC.

Okay, that's your opinion. You said it yourself, the project CARS video is sick, and that's a very satisfactory level for me, honestly. I really don't need more, Nintendo no Nintendo.

Seriously.

No, I said it was 'disgusting' because it's coming to last gen consoles ;P

Satisfactory or not, photorealism is not determined by opinion. Look at today's games more closely, not just the faces of characters and you'll notice a whole world of imperfections and uglyness.

I'm not that picky, and I'm sure that PC games are far beyond HD twin games on that front already.

Plus, the two games I am familiar with being Starcraft 2 and The Last of Us (trailers and gameplay vids) did not leave me wanting.

If you're arguing with me after that point about humanoid models as of TLoU and such, I couldn't care less. It'll come in due time I'm in no hurry.

Exactly. Just like Apple products, we do not need them until we see 'em.

Never thought I'd see the day ;)

What people need to remember.

Graphics wont be the only thing in the next gen which will scream out massive improvement.

You have to consider the scale of enviroments, detail, animations, and the fine details like a greater indepth of enviroment interaction.

Look at current gen and for example Gears of war, Epic tried to add destruction to the maps but they are more scripted than anythign else, imagine real time destruction and everything you can see is interactable destructable and movable, Ok there are many games what do have these features but not combined and no where near the quality of what we see in uncahrted 3 (graphics wise)

Lets look at l4d 2, graphics are no where near comparable to uncharted, but uncharted doesnt have as many moving object on screen (humans/Zombies)

Each generation upgrade isnt just graphics, its

RAM - more objects on screen, this can be from enviromental items to moving objects/humans vehicals etc.

Processing power - Gives them many object there own unique AI or physical effects. a can getting kicked will move, grass moving i nteh wind and getting crushed under your feet. Hair blowing in the wind Animation see link below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEddrY0fA4Q <-- look at this as an example the technology is there, it can be done but combinign it with enviroments action etc is too much for current gen, these "finer" details are what will make next gen noticable.

The graphics improvement will combine all this together to give us a more fluid/realistic game even if the graphics dont look much better having the enviroment more populated with objects gives us the illusion of better realism, (Killzone/Uncharted use it to great effect) the object geometry are not actually very detailed go ingame go clsoe to objects and you can see this. but the way its all put together makes the enviroment look so good when you stand back.
