Such a change needs time, it is like a chain, step by step. Focus on spreading the concept of critical thinking in general not on particular belief, if you do, you won't find a listening ear.

Try to stay out of the mode where the person is defending their beliefs and help them understand it on other terms they can't map to their system of belief. That way they can reason it out themselves without affecting their mental framework too suddenly.

There are peole out there who are trying to do the exact same thing you are talking about. I am sure you've heard of Tareq Al Suwaidan and Adnan Ibrahim. Both have been shunned by other Shaikh's severly. Tareq has been accused of being one of the Shia who is working undercover, recently they took it further and called him Kafer since he refuses to accept Hudud of apostasy (Hudood). Don't let me start with Adnan Ibrahim...

Sadly, I have come to learn that even the most educated, well-mannered, and religious Muslims (at least the ones I have interacted with) are totally intolerant of others, are not open to new ideas, do not welcome change, do not consider dialogue and in many cases are not even aware of the mere existence of "others" in their society and sometimes in their own circle of friends.

When i say "others" not only does that include gays, atheists, agnostics, secularists, socialists, Israeli sympathizers, non international Jewish conspiracy subscribers, but even friends with slight religious differences. It's the reason why I lost faith in the arabic spring, what's the point if we are not ready to accept differences?
