Now, if Apple entered the game industry for real with a gaming machine and would soak up 50% of the market share, leaving the Big 3 to fight for the rest - then perhaps a partnership is wise. But that won't happen for at least... 2 years ;) |
What makes you think Apple would be successful in the gaming industry this time?
Beyond that, outside of iPods Apple has never been able to maintain a dominant marketshare in any product they produce; Apple represents (roughly) 12% of the PC market, 16.8% of the smart phone market, and (last I heard) the iPad had fallen to (just above) 50% of the tablet market. Over the next 24 months I would expect Apple to continue to hold 12.5% of the PC market, fall to 12.5% of the smart phone market, and fall to 25% of the tablet market because Apple only cares about producing high margin electronics for the high end consumer.
Personally, I would expect Apple to be embarrassed if they entered into the console market if they followed a typical Apple strategy ... Essentially, rather than releasing a console that cost $300 to manufacture for $300 like Nintendo would, or a $500 to manufacture console for $400 like Microsoft or Sony would, Apple would release a system that cost $300 to manufacture for $600.
