Forums - Sales - US 3DS sales double Vita's total in July - analysts

CVG

Game industry analysts have weighed in with US hardware and software sales predictions for the month of July, ahead of the NPD Group's release of official market data later this week.

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan and fellow analyst firm EEDAR both expect 3DS sales to be double those of Vita, and for Xbox 360 to remain the top-selling console in the States for a 19th consecutive month.

Pachter also predicted July software sales of $260 million, down 23 percent compared to July 2011's $338 million.

In a research note distributed today, the analyst said: "We expect July console software sales to be led by new release EA's NCAA Football 13, with Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Take-Two's Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line expected to be among the top sellers, the latter due to its late June release date.

"Fellow new releases Activision Blizzard's Ice Age: Continental Drift, Atari's Test Drive: Ferrari Legends, and Electronic Arts' The Secret World likely were all negatively impacted by weak reviews, with the latter hurt by growing disinterest in MMOs as well."

Wedbush / EEDAR September sales estimates (change year-on-year):

360 - 200,000 (-28%) / 201,000 (-27%)

PS3 - 140,000 (-3%) / 152,000 (+5%)

3DS - 121,000 (+32) / 125,000 (+37)

Wii - 78,000 (-58%) / 75,000 (-60%)

DS - 100,000 (-67%) / 109,000 (-64%)

Vita - 60,000 (n/a) / 61,000 (n/a)

PSP - 10,000 (-84%) / 9,000 (-86%)

PS2 - 1,000 (-88%) / n/a

Total - 710,000 (-34%) / 732,000 (-32%)

Since now Sony is combining hardware shipments into one, it's only fair to say the 3DS "Ecosystematic Family" is actually more than triple the PSP's.

But, it still sucks, bad numbers. But it's almost guaranteed to say that number will improve a lot in the holidays.

I think what is more telling is that the DS is predicted to outsell the Vita and PSP combined.
That is the DS -- not the 3DS.

Also, the DS is predicted to sell almost as many units as the 3DS. My guess is that the price cut on the older model may be (temporarily ?) cannibalizing the market.

The DS isn't cannibalizing the 3DS market, the 3DS simply doesn't offer enough reasons to be bought in larger numbers yet. The DS found itself in a similar situation at the same point in its life in America, it was neck to neck in monthly sales with the GBA or even getting outsold by it.

Software sells hardware and the most effective way to get people to buy a new video game system are exclusive hit games. I don't know how prevelant the myth (well, I think it's a myth) that consumers think that the 3DS is just a DS with 3D still is, but even that should die down as soon as it's clear that New Super Mario Bros. 2 cannot be played on any DS model.

I wasn't into handhelds -- or sales -- when the DS came out. I do remember it doing poorly at the start in the US as it was routinely outsold by the PSP (which was predicted to end Nintendo's stranglehold on the portable market).

I do know the software has not been as strong as some would have liked it to be ... basically because Nintendo tried to help third parties and they just don't seem to want to be helped.  So I agree that a lack of software would limit sales. However, since it is backward compatable, it should not have been as much of an issue until the recent price drop made the DSi so much less expensive.

The DS could play all GBA games, but it didn't really help the system's sales in 2005 and the first half of 2006.

Even before the recent DS price cut, the DS was still selling quite well while the 3DS was struggling. If there was no price cut, the 3DS would sell basically the same amount as it does now and the DS would sell less, because the sales increase for the DS can be attributed to consumers who aren't interested in a 3DS anyway (i.e. the typical late adopter of hardware). They just want a cheap system with a lot of cheap games available. The sales that the 3DS is not getting are those of DS owners/people who are on the fence and waiting until a certain number of games they want are available for the system. A DS sale doesn't equal a lost 3DS sale and blaming another system for a lack of sales is always the easy way out. It's not the DS that is holding back the 3DS in America, it's the 3DS itself.

I had never really noticed that -- but you are correct.  I had been focused on Global numbers which paint a different picture because of the sales in Japan. What is even stranger is that half -- or more -- of the worldwide DS sales are in the US.
