Forums - Gaming - Anyone else prefer the older arcade-styled shooters over the modern 'realistic' shooters?

I pretty much agree. Halo is my favorite online shooter for these reasons.

What bothers me most about modern shooters though is snipers.

I'm adaptable, I guess. I used to love chasing people around in Quake II for the PS1 (Awesome four player split screen. Some of my best memories from that era), Battle Mode in SNES/N64 Mario Kart, Medal of Honor PS1, Starfox 64, etc. I also like the fast paced chaos of Call of Duty.

One thing I'd like to see but I don't think it'd ever catch on is a death match mode where you only have a small amount of health and when you die, it's over until the next round. I'm sure there's a game like that out there. I just see people taking waaaaay to many risks in a game like Call of Duty. It kills the realism for me because gamers act with no consideration that they could die. It's just a race for the high score.

I'd probably hate it in practice but I actually like the idea of realism. Sue me.

Counter strike is still going strong so it did catch on. It is a bit frustrating when you just start playing, sitting out most of the time until the match is finished. At least you can follow your fellow players and root for them while you wait.

Yes please, Januari 2013 on Steam :)
I hope they put the shroom and bounce power up back in as well.

I can appreciate both myself, tho I probably lean a bit more towards the arcady titles. I had some great fun with Hard Reset recently.

Halo is still the best. I prefer fun over what some people consider realistic. I've never played a shooter of any kind that I consider like real life so I don't understand the debate about realism. For me it's about fun and Halo is the most fun.

For me, arcade style equates to fun, while simulation style equates to boredom. It takes zero imagination to try and make things look and act like they do in the real world. But when you defy the laws of the universe and make things more exciting than they can possibly be in real life, you create something unique, special, and with character. Just my opinion, anyway.

I don't think Uncharted fits the bill of those other games like COD and Battlefield on some of your points.

Low health with little to no tactical side to the game equals a boring game. But if there is a decent tactical side too, then realism can be a great thing.

Nope. All I play now is BF3 with my friends.
