Forums - Sales - The Console Wars! - cheering for one product over another

Hey guys, happyD here.

Well, we are all here because we love sales numbers and want to see some titles and products sell better than others. For example, being a Nintendo fan, I personally like seeing Nintendo games selling well.

So, here are some questions I had for you:

1) When you see exclusive games for your favorite console sell well, do you like that?

2)  A - When you see exclusive games go multiplat _onto_ your favorite console, do you like that?

B-  When you see exclusive games go multiplat _from_ your favorite console (was exclusive to your fav console but no more), do you like that?

3) When you see multiplat games for your favorite console sell better, do you like that?

4) When you see games that are competing on two consoles that are not your favorite console, which do you prefer do well?

5) This one is for 360 fans. Do you like it when one portable does well against another?

6) For all fans, does it make you happy when your favorite console sells better than the others?

7) (*New) Lastly, when two consoles are competing that are not your favorite console, are you happy when one does better than another? If so, which one? :)

1)Yes
2)Yes
3)IDC, as long as i can still enjoy. Example i still enjoy CoD on both 360 and Wii( Wii is my favorite because i love the controlls, it adds another layer of fun.)
4)IDC, i like seeing the arguments though, as if it matters which did better
6)Alittle but honestly i just find it interesting because Ninty aims for people that aren't within the market so seeing them do well is good because it means its working.

7)IDC

There is nothing wrong with console wars. Its just the gaming industry's mirror to professional sports. Corporations are the city/country, the console itself is the "team", and the fans are those who live in the city/country (play the favourite console). Fans like in sports, identify with their team and get patriotic because their city/country helps define them as a person.

That said, nothing wrong with healthy competition and trash talking, its all part of the game. Funny how in sports the "soccer mom" just wants everyone to have fun and is looked down upon by the sports fans. Yet here the "soccer mom" reigns supreme and the real fans get labelled negatively as a fanboy when its the standard in every other competition you can think of. Gaming is very unique indeed. But I digress.

1. Yes.
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Neutral.
5. Yes
6. Yes

Its all about cheering on your "team". Gotta show your support for the team :)

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

The funniest thing is that I was listening to one of your videos when I wrote this :)

No to all questions, lol.

Fans of gaming are nothing like fans of sports. The entire purpose of sports is to have one particular team be victorious. And in sports, a team's victory is entirely dependent upon another team's loss. It's not possible for two teams to win in the same competition. Therefore, it would be pretty difficult for a person to root for two different teams when competiting. If you identify yourself as an X fan, you're going to inherently want the Y team to fail as they could prevent X team from maximum success.

The opposite is true for gaming fans, at least most of us. It is quite possible for multiple companies in the gaming industries to be successful. There does not need to be a loser to allow for another company's success. The problem is your definition of success, which you believe is doing-better-than-the-other-company. Most people are not glued to one 'side' like you are, they just enjoy seeing success, in quality and sales, from all companies. In order for one console to succeed, the other console does not need to lose or fail. I think it's sad that you need to go around making other companies look bad in order for your own company to look good. You're creating some sort of false survival-of-the-fittest scenario.

This isn't sports.

Then again games will always exist no matter. Even if a manufacturer loses the idea is that they will still exist as a 3rd party. Also, the loss of one doesn't necessarily mean things will get worse. For example, with the PS3, Sony was struggling yet in my opinion the PS3 is where Sony released its best exclusives.

Many will say the GC and the DC were some of the best consoles ever made, yet both failed at critical appeal.

That's why I disagree with the bottom line of your post.

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make.

Me being a Playstation fan, I was not happy to see the Gamecube or the Dreamcast fail. I did not look at the Gamecube low sales and think, "Yes! This makes the PS2 look really good!". Also, if the Gamecube did sell really well, I would not have thought, "No! Now, the PS2 victory is nonexistent!". If the Gamecube did sell really well, I would have thought, "Wow, that's really great for the Gamecube". There does not need to be a loser in order for there to be a winner. Not in terms of sales or quality.

1) Of course. When games sell well in general, it's a good thing. But I am slightly more happy when a Nintendo exclusive sells well... well, if it's a good game, anyway. I still shake my head when lousy stuff manages to sell like hotcakes.

2) I guess so? More games on more consoles is a pretty good thing. I feel like the era of exclusivity for third parties is coming to an end. Development costs are getting too high to justify only releasing on a single console.

3) I don't really pay attention to that sort of thing, so no, not really.

4) The better one.

6) A little bit? I believe this is a byproduct of the GameCube days. As a GC owner, and one who was too young to know better, it was rough being told by all of my classmates that the PS2 had driven Sega out of business, and Nintendo would be next. Imagining a world dominated by GTA, without Zelda and Mario, was worrying. Again, I was like 11. Anyway it always makes me feel good to see Nintendo products selling well. They don't necessarily have to be selling the best, but it doesn't hurt.

7) Not really, no.

For me it's different. Since I believe that Nintendo in the past made the best games, I want to see them dominate the market again.

Why? Reason is simple. I believe 3rd parties thrived best with Nintendo in terms of creativity especially. For that reason, I'm happy when Nintendo dominates more, as it gives hope for more support on their platform, and seeing 3rd parties working more closely with Nintendo.
