what the?!? ..has surface always had a full keyboard? if so... isn't this just a laptop?

Its a tablet where you can purchase a smart cover that will add a full keyboard if you want. Its a briliant design that gives  you the best of both worlds.

OT: They said that during their original press conference regarding the two tablets; RT would launch with Win8 and Pro would launch a few months later.

okay, so to reiterate.   the keyboard is an optional peripheral?

Yes. Have you not seen the video?

..i have now.  :)

but obviously i wasn't aware.  good feature imo.  any word on comfort?  i tried typing on an ipad and i found it to be hard on my fingers.  glass has no cushion so it starts to hurt pretty quickly for anything longer than a tweet-sized typing.

I just now realized how badly I want this thing (with keyboard). The weight on current laptops has always bugged me. However, I doubt that it would be worth the money.

Have they mentioned a price yet?

Oh, I thought they came with it

(or do you mean optional = detachable?)

If they don't come with the keyboard out of the box I imagine they will be annoyingly expensive additions.

I'm betting on them being separate or bundled depending. But it hasn't been confirmed either way.

I think it looks phenominal and I want the Pro version myself. From what I read the touch or actual keyed keyboards are both responsive and comfortable. The only downside I see to this design is that unlike a laptop, using the keyboard on your lap won't really work. You'll need a desk. But as a tablet, it'll be all good.

Ah, so it's not confimed yet.

My bet is the RT version will normally be sold without (buy this keyboard and cover for the low low price of £80) but I think (hope) the Pro may come with it as standard.

I see myself getting the RT version of this lovely device. I want a full x86 Win 8 experience on an Ultrabook-like format with a touch screen.

The following Win 8 scenarios make most sense to me when it comes to tablets and thair limitations:

Windows RT – Light user that does browsing email and occasional casual gaming and doesn’t really care about x86 backwards compatibility

Win 8 AMD APU – User looking to consume content or a student that is looking for full x86 backwards compatibility and is not looking to spend $800+ on a laptop/tablet. Light PC gamers also could consider this configuration due to APUs graphical capabilities.

Win 8 Intel (I3+) – someone needing a PC work or intense CPU processing.

I don’t really see why anyone would get an Atom based Win 8 device to be honest with AMD APUs around.

I just want a tablet that has windows on it to compile my code. It also has to dual boot into Linux to compile my fancier code and do other fancy shit that linux does.

Edit: No, Android is not a proper linux distribution.
