Forums - General - Fried chicken and cola: Most popular dish in the fattest country on Earth

94.5% of the inhabitants of Nauru, a small island in the pacific, are classed as overweight or obese. This is blamed on the fact that a lack of land has forced them to import fast food from other countries, but also that obesity is seen as a sign of wealth in the country. Over half the 10,000 population have type-2 diabetes.

I didn't know this place existed, but 94.5% is a pretty incredible statistic. I guess this could be considered the obesity thread in general, as well as discussing this island. What measures do you think should be taken to try and solve the obesity crisis facing the world - on that note, do you think there is something that needs solving?

Of course there is something that needs solving. Being so overweight is damaging to the person themselves and costly for society as a whole.

I thought Qatar was the fattest.

94.5%? Jesus Christ. Although if they arrived at that number by using BMI, then I call bullshit!

They don't need to worry about sea levels rising at least. Fat floats in the water while muscles sink like an anchor.

Yeah I thought it was gonna be another make fun of America thread, glad to see it's not.

Well can't blame anybody but themselves. Better start jogging, how big is the island?

USA is just the 9th fattest country:

1. Nauru 94.5
2. Federated States of Micronesia 91.1
3. Cook Islands 90.9
4. Tonga 90.8
5. Niue 81.7
6. Samoa 80.4
7. Palau 78.4
8. Kuwait 74.2
9. United States 74.1
10. Kiribati 73.6
11. Dominica 71.0
12. Barbados 69.7
13. Argentina 69.4
14. Egypt 69.4
15. Malta 68.7
16. Greece 68.5
17. New Zealand 68.4
18. United Arab Emirates 68.3
19. Mexico 68.1
20. Trinidad and Tobago 67.9

Edit: Just noticed all the countrys are warm countrys. Maybe because if its cold the body has to burn more calories to warm itself ?

74% of Americans are overweight? I don't believe that. I've been many states across America, and I don't see overwieight people THAT often.

Unless I go to Ryan's. That's where they horde.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

I saw no fat people while in Chicago... which is a surprise...

OT: Yes! Now that "American's are so fat!" arguement is only half true! We can comeback with "At least we aren't Nauru."

On a serious note, that's ridiculous! How can that even be possible? :O

Just watched the video, wow that is just horrible. How can you let it go so far?

@mysticwolf

Overweight means BMI over 25 its no problem to reach that without looking fat. Bodybuilders are technically obese. Those statistics don't take Bodyfat into account because its hard to get this information. If you have a BMI of 30 you would be obese but with 9% Bodyfat you woudl be a trained person. Still tendencies can be seen in charts like this.
