X is my most hated Final Fantasy.

if i was a developers and saw this, i would be like "there's no pleasing you people !" no offence, there just some many different opinions.

If you wanna talk about redesigns XII was really out there. At least with XIII they tried to go back to narration.

Is it even possible to please the final fantasy fanbase anymore? Given the nature of final fantasy to evolve it seems new fans are picked up with each release who all have their own opinion of what makes final fantasy great to them. At this point even if they did return to the more classical elements it seems they would upset the fans of XII and XIII just as much as they upset the more traditional fans this generation. It seems like final fantasy has the most divided fanbase of any game that I'm aware of.

My secret is that FF 13 was my first in the series. I think I'm about 8-10 hours in, and I find it very enjoyable. I enjoy the combat system; I prefer real-time over turn-based, and the combat system in 13 isn't strictly turn-based, so I don't dislike it.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I played most of the oldschool FF when they released. I also loved 6 7 10 12 the most. Yet XIII never made me want to play it. I just dont like it.

This is true, but this is also because they try changing the overall gameplay aspect, which is probably why it kept the series popular and a million seller. I now understand why they did the remakes for the earlier games as well, as they want the new fans who enjoyed recent games to enjoy the older classics but in a more appealing way (graphics wise).

I think we are getting somewhere here, they could have made a great game with classic mechanics and all the familiar features.

It would have been praised as a great game. IX has all that and is one of the most highly praised among FF games on GameRankings and Metacritic.

But also one of the worse sellers. XIII ended up as an almost 7 million hit at a time when the rest of the japanese market is in the dumpster. They had to take risks.

FF IX released very much at the end of PS1's life, and after the PS2 had launched.  It kind of got lost in the hype for that console & the upcoming FFX (which only released a year later).  I suspect that had a much larger impact on sales than its mechanics.

This and the Resident Evil series is why both series have lasted for such a long time while other series stayed true to their genre without any dynamic changes but sold poorly each installation.

This also changes my mind on their approach to sequels as well (assuming sequels were treated with equal diligence). In this manner they continue innovating while still returning to the elements a particular sets of fans appreciated about a particular title. It'd be nice if they took it one step further and did final fantasy sub-series similar to type-0 where they could retain certain elements but still change the story. The only concern I would have about this is over-saturation.

XII launched: JP March 16, 2006 | NA October 31, 2006 | PAL February 23, 2007. that was REALLY late and it did sell close to 6 mil

I predict Versus will hit at least 5 mil. Easy

No, I know.  In terms of Final Fantasy sales figures, that kind of illustrates my point more - it sold similarly to IX coming at the same point in the console's life.  IX sold about 500k less copies, sure.

Plus, there was a bit of a difference between the two.  X was on the horizon, we knew it was coming and that it was coming soon.  There wasn't any new FF on the horizon when XII launched, and indeed it was 3 years until we saw XIII (compared to the 1 year from IX to X).

Most seem to view Versus as a spin off. It may struggle to sell that much even if it deserves it (when it finally releases).

You people are making me want to play FFIX again :(

But I'm planning to record/play all the FF games in order.

You should just get the members of Vgchartz to help you play through all of them so you can get to it quicker. Vgchartz should have its own let's play channel, though really I've never understood the whole let's play. I've watched a few when I'm stuck in an area but what does the player get out of recording them?
