FF IX released very much at the end of PS1's life, and after the PS2 had launched.  It kind of got lost in the hype for that console & the upcoming FFX (which only released a year later).  I suspect that had a much larger impact on sales than its mechanics.

XII launched: JP March 16, 2006 | NA October 31, 2006 | PAL February 23, 2007. that was REALLY late and it did sell close to 6 mil

I predict Versus will hit at least 5 mil. Easy

No, I know.  In terms of Final Fantasy sales figures, that kind of illustrates my point more - it sold similarly to IX coming at the same point in the console's life.  IX sold about 500k less copies, sure.

Plus, there was a bit of a difference between the two.  X was on the horizon, we knew it was coming and that it was coming soon.  There wasn't any new FF on the horizon when XII launched, and indeed it was 3 years until we saw XIII (compared to the 1 year from IX to X).
