"I'm gonna get y'all out of this shit. One way or another." Winston Zeddemore was standing on the top floors of the hotel. Ever since the crisis started, no one had ventured past the lower levels. Now he had gathered the remaining guests and was standing in the 42nd floor. After the day the earth slowed down, New York City and the rest of the world remained crippled. The result of this was an adjacent high-rise leaning on the surprisingly sturdy hotel.
"We're better off out there than being killed off in here," he said, standing on the edge where the twisted concrete and metal announced the impact of the buildings. "We just gotta jump. From here to there, and make our way down that building."
The four remaining guests were watching him intently. Two were willing to follow, the other two were merely smirking to themselves. Zeddemore was getting ready to jump.
"I go, and then the rest of you go. There's no catching the ghosts... there's only escaping." He took a deep breath, arched his knees, and took the leap of faith.
For a second Zeddemore was free. His heart skipped. He was in mid-air, and the freedom was pure, fresh.
I would've liked my last seconds to have been that joyfull.
A beam. It was a sharp steel beam from the hotel that jotted out and impailed Zeddemore. He never saw it coming, but everyone still on the hotel did. He was in the air when the concrete snapped and the steel extended towards his body. It snagged him from the air and threw his lifeless body back into the hotel.
I'm a ghost, and I still felt the chills.
The hotel didn't want Zeddemore to leave. He broke the rules. He was never supposed to escape. There was a grumble, the whole building shook, and two of the guests fell to their knees. It was Mario and Noctis - they were defeated, Zeddemore was dead and it felt like the building was going to fall on them.
Stefl and nen, though, they laughed. Their laugh boomed and washed out the shaking of the hotel. In seconds, their laugh was the shaking of the hotel. The building shook in bursts, each one coordinating with the deed grating "ha's" that echoed in the hallways.
It all stopped and both nen and stefl rose to the air. Their eyes turned yellow and they spoke in unison: "You are never going to leave!"
Behind me there was a loud crash. Debris flew through me as I turned to see what fell behind me. It was a white room that fell from the top floor. At first it was empty, but then spirits flashed into view, one by one. It was all the dead... they never left.
No one will ever leave.
