Ignoring the things that are false, 99.9% out of all of this is 1) either copied from other 'sources', 2) already guessed over a thousand years earlier by mainly Ancient Greek scolars and philosophers (that also goed for the spherical Earth prediction you mentioned) or 3) established by simple observation. The other 0.1% is either pure luck or so vague it aplies to anything anyway. Wake up man, read some real history books!

On the subject;

All religions are born from the need to explain things. During each time when a religion was created (well, 'thought of' really), people couldn't explain something in everyday life because science hadn't advanced very far yet. If there was something that couldn't be explained, people thought "well, some higher power must've done it". Also, back then people were so enormously stupid, they blindly followed any madman who had the 'answers'.

This is why I cannot for the life of me understand why someone in today's day and age can really believe (I mean believe, not follow some ideals) in these fairy tales. Basically everything can be explained already. Furthermore, why one feels the absolute need to force their ridiculous beliefs on others is totally beyond me. Can't you just stay with those who feel like you do? Is someone else's belief on the other side of the world actually lowering your chance to get into the better part of the afterlife? Why? Does your seat on the clouds grow when there are more like you? Shouldn't you just go to heaven or whatever and then laugh at those who were wrong? Leave everyone else alone already! Like those idiots in Timbuktu recently. Why destroy some old tombs, that have been there for a thousand years, with people in them that are of your own religion? What good would that do? Do these people actually think their would be pleased somehow? I'd reckon honorable people like Saladin and Muhammed himself would turn around in their graves if they knew that these were the people they established and protected kingdoms for. This is just one example, every single religion is guilty of something idiotic.

But enough ranting.

To answer the poll, none are right. There is no one true god, all monotheistic religions believe in the same god, even when most of the zealots don't even realize it. They all believe there is only one god. Basically you can't go wrong. You should only need to decide if you think monotheistic religions are right about there being one god, or that there exists in fact, actually only polytheism.

For the record, I am atheist. This rant is not an attack on anyone personally. As much as one can be. I'm also proud to live in a country where atheists are the majority and are growing.

If you absolutely must believe...then Agnosticism is best: the belief that there may or may not be a higher being but you can't possibly know. that way, you can chose to simply be a good person and make people here happy, and should there be a god, then if you're legitimately good, you'll be fine no matter which religion is right.

The thing that matters most is that you be a good person regardless of what you believe.

Asking which religion is correct is the same as asking what language or what nationality is correct.

Erm... you can. Thoughts are electromagnetic pulses through the brain cells. We dont yet have the technology to determine what exactly the thought was but we can prove when you are thinking and not (there is even technology that already exists that can guide a wheel chair by reading your thoughts. Whatch brave new world with stephen hawking if you want to see it). Emotions are chemical reactions within your body (for example hormone levels rise with love), you can detect them taking out blood samples and analysing or any matter of test i am not familiar with as i dont study medicine. There are actually hormones called dopamine and timine (not sure about the name of this one) that you generate wether you are having positive or negative feelings.

Really, ignorance seems to be the only precursor for religion. If we all strive to learn, we will all realise how unproductive religion is in the grand scheme. Its nothing but the fear of death that fuels it. But wether you lie to your self or not, there really is no escaping the reality.

We can all hope for a higher life form that created us and will save us come death time. I hope such an entitiy exists as im sure everyone else does. But, you have to be able to face the fact and know that that possibility is extremely remote. And what, do you think theres a bug heaven aswell? Why are we more important than the bugs? We are not the center of the universe, we are really nothing but bugs when you look at the big picture of the cosmos. Thinking we are special is an act of extreme arrogance, even if understandable.

This may be true about long extinct pantheonic belief systems from long ago (Jupiter is the reason for thunder and lightning, etc...); but this is not at all what religions like Christianity, Buddhism, Confucian based religions, and what many other long surviving religions are about. They're about transformation and the philosophies that aid in attaining that transformation. For example; they all aim to rid feelings of greed and idolatry (idolatry could be something as simple as videogame fandom , something I confess I still suffer from =P - although only on the Internet); now this is not something science does - science is a process by which we can better understand our physical universe by forming hypotheses; and then through experimentation we can test them; and if correct, we can form scientific theories - and this is a completely goal different than religion.

There are those who feel the two can work together to find deeper truths. For example, the Big Bang Theory validated the Cosmological and Teleological arguments for the existence of God, that have existed since Plato and Aristotle. According to the Big Bang Theory the Universe had a beginning (13.7 billion years ago), and also that the physical laws and quantities of energy, matter, dark, energy, dark matter, etc... are actually quite specific. If we simulated a Big Bang, and the physical properties and ratios of physical particles and energies were randomized, only once in 10 to the 50th power would we get a Universe where solid matter was possible.

This is indeed the most logical and sensible course of action. I share that view, and really, for society to move forwards we all should.
