Yes, because Sony thought they were the masters of the universe and thought people would actually pay $600 and they'd still dominate. That plan failed after a few months of horrible sales. After that they have been desperately trying to undercut Microsoft by

Now ask yourself. How can Microsoft ask a $100 premium for its console? If I can get a PS3 with a 250GB for $229 I shouldnt have to pay $299 for a 250GB X360. It should cost $199 because Xbox was the underdog, has no Blu-ray, has no free-online and has fewer xclusives. And yet they can over-charge because they secured the online echo-system with core gamers earlier.

The main X360 SKU has cost $299 for 4 years now (it went from $349 to $299 in Summer 2008). That's a $0 drop.

In the same time PS3 went from $399 to $249 and soon down to $229. That's a $170 drop and loss of revenue.

You've misunderstood me. It wasn't the lack of sales that made Sony lose so much money. It was the fact that every time they sold a console, they lost hundreds of dollars. A Ps3 cost a few hundred dollars more than $600 if I remember correctly.

This is probably half-ish of the reasons why Sony flushed money down the toilet for years. I remember people saying the R&D costs for the PS3 were insanely high, and their massive investments into the CELL tech has not given them much back.

Nov 2013 together with X720. They don't want to wait. Sony lost so many $ billions by being one year later than Microsoft.

If I remember correctly Sony themselves projected 12 million PS3s shipment in the current Fiscal year so the sales are definitely decreasing. Next year could be down at 9 million shipped.

This new slim will still be produced for a good number of years since it'll sell along with the PS4 a few years into next gen.

It is my understanding that Sony lost $ billions because the PS3 was expensive to manufacture. Not because of the late release. Had they launched in 2005, the ps3 would have been even more expensive and they probably would have lost even more monies.

Sony lost most of that money in the early years, correct, but if you instead look at it as a pure profit comparison to MS, you'll discover that while Microsoft is making a $1-1.5 billion yearly profit off of Xbox, Sony is breaking even at best (Xbox Live subs explain a big part of Xbox's profit, around $600 million according to a recent thread but not nearly all of it).

I am saying, look at the premium. MS is making huge bucks on each hardware sold. Sony for some reason can't charge the same premium. You must ask yourself, why can't Sony charge $299 for its console when Microsoft can? That $50 difference per unit sold becomes more than $500 million per year in lost profits.

I'm thinking late 2013. Though, when the new Slim releases will have an affect on that.

I'm not sure when it (the new Slim) releases sooooo....

they didnt loose b/c of launching late

i believe the promblems were

releasing HW that devs couldnt work with as well resulting in inferior multis, no need for the casuals to pay top $ for a console when theres a cheaper alternative that can do the job better.  anyone can charge $600+ for a console and sucseed but if it cant play cod4 as good, have controller that rumbles or acheivements then noones gonna bite.

loss of 3rd party exclusives like gta, resident evil, final fantasy and many others

these shouldnt be issues for next gen so sony could release when next box or even later b/c they could be going with AMD which is very dev freind and they have a very good list of exclusives that theyve built this gen so loosing 3rd party excluisves (which at this point is almost imossible) should be a promblem like it was this gen

This is true as well.

Take a look at the Poll, Superchunk. Are you shitting yourself, yet?

lol, post of the day.

We're many who would laugh so hard at poor superchunk if his console launch predictions went wrong. (cause he's been so cocky about them. We all love you though 'chunk!).

Oh I know. If I do end up wrong... and that's a BIG if... I will be riduculed for quite a while as well as have another damn sig change to Jay.

I don't even know why you would think the NexBox would release this year. I think Jay just used common sense.

Go to the thread in the sig. Lots or rumors at the time (nov2011) and it made sense that MS would want to match Nintendo's launch. However, I did know it wasn't 100% sure.

This I know for sure.

Won't happen. We'll each have a sig disgrace then.
