Nonsense. The real curse is the 4th console. Atari Jaguar, Dreamcast, Gamecube, etc.

But it's at console #3 where the bad fortune begins. It also has more cursed companies/divisions as well with the inclusion of Sony. Plus we don't know if the PS4 might do worse than the PS3.

The resemblance is a little eerie too, in that many are saying that Microsoft is in the best position moving into the next generation (which is not without merit. They have a foot in the door of the casual market and yet retain the publisher goodwill that will keep third party games coming), much as how Nintendo or Sony were in strong positions going in to the 5th and 7th generations respectively.

In the Saturn's and 7800's case, however, the writing was really on the wall. The 7800 was too-little-too-late on Atari's part, after they realized that they could sell actual consoles again, while the awkward life and death of the 32X helped to scuttle the chances of a smooth transition. Sega had squandered their Genesis momentum well before the Saturn moved in.

The 7800 would have been competitive had it been released when developed and test marketed -- 1984.  Instead, it got dumped from a warehouse and handmedowns after the NES jump started the North American gaming market.

The Saturn was plagued by Sega decisions leaving a bad taste in gamers mouths before (32X), during (premature launch) and after (pulled from the market) its life.

Intereesting that no one besides Nintendo has made it past four consoles. (Atari would have five if you included home computers: 2600, 5200/400-800 series, 7800, Jag, ST).  (The 5200 was essentially a keyboardless version of the 400-800 series computer).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Wait, are we talking about the original Xbox or Xbox360?

Wouldnt the Xbox360 be considered as #2 this generation?

If not this gen but next gen, what makes you think they'll be #3?

I'm trying to say the third console made by a game company/division usually has some serious faults/loss which I label as a curse. The next Microsoft console would be their third.

The problem with saying that is that all the consoles you listed were considered moderately successful to successful. The Saturn did very well in it's home country (not to mention the bad fortunes/reputation started with the 32x and CD to a lesser extent), the Nintendo 64 sold respectfully for it's time and had some of the best selling games of the generation despite arriving much later than it's competitors and poor 3rd party support (You could also say the bad fortunes started with the Virtual Boy which is difficult to consider a home console but equally as difficult to consider a handheld :p), and the PlayStation 3 is doing pretty well for itself now. Don't get me wrong I get what you're going for with losing their position as market leader and all, but I think it's flawed.

Hm I guess we'll agree to disagree from here then.

Not to mention the 5200 was the start of Atari's slow decline :p
