Sony targeting 13 million PS3 sales for fiscal 13

"I'm going to go out there and nail it," says SCEE boss.

Sony is aiming to sell 13 million PlayStation 3 consoles globally between April 2012 and March 2013, SCEE boss Jim Ryan has told VideoGamer.

"We're really just focussing on PS3 right now," Ryan told us during E3.

"We've got a target, which is a matter of public record, of 13 million units to sell this fiscal year. It's pretty demanding, but given the software that was on display we've got a pretty good crack at that.

"I'm given demanding, aggressive numbers to meet, and that's what I'm focussed on right now. I think [SCE Worldwide Studios president] Shuhei Yoshida's team has given me the tools to do that. I'm going to go out there and nail it."

The latest figures released by Sony revealed that the firm had sold 63.9m PlayStation 3s globally by March 2012.

22m of those were sold across Europe.

SCEE hasn't forgotten about Vita, though.

"We've just got to focus on building install base, and that's what we do," added Ryan.

"We've been in the market three months now and we're perfectly comfortable with the way the thing is doing. We run our lives on a five-to-ten horizon with these things, and we're looking at our product strategy in those sorts of terms, looking at content strategy in those sorts of terms, looking forward to Christmas 2012.

"I'm pleased with the software line-up, and I think it's going to do very well."

Does PS3 need price cut to ship 13m? It seem there might be slimmer PS3 but no price cut.

They need to convert Xbox players in America to PS3 players. Most don't know the greatness of free online yet. Once they do though it'll be like "once you go black, you never go back," haha no homo.

Anyone know the track record?

What were shipments last Fiscal Year (or calendar year if you like)? About 14 million for both PS3 and X360, correct?

13 million is reasonable then.

I wonder how much X360 will ship. Perhaps 11.5 million. Which means that the PS360 sales gap would still not be closed.

Tough nut to crack, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more realistic than the "10M Vita's" goal, which is pretty... dumb and lying.

13 million is a solid number, and a reasonable one. Sony has a good line-up for this and next year, so it shouldn't be a problem to reach that number for the end of March 2013.
Then, there could be a price cut, so it could be a really easy target.

They aimed at 15 million last year with a pricecut and failed. (13.8 million or something like that)

Now they are aiming at 13 million... If they are as optimistic as last year they will end up with 12 - 12.5 million, so a 1.3 million decline or 9.5%.

I think it is optimistic, especially with the next gen coming up.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

12.5 - 13 million would be cool without a price cut.

Isnt that what PS3 sold in 2011?

Basically their plan is to keep PS3 sales flat in 2012. Meaning no price cut. All I needed to know.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Of course they are focusing on PS3.

Fine prediction, though. Shouldn't be too hard especially with a price cut.
