You said the Mario Series should evolve with it's first generation. Why should it evolve with it's first generation if there are more generations to come to play Mario games again?

People are failing to realise that Nintendo extend Mario more than just a video game character. To many, he's become a sort of "seal of quality" to the general public. You want a fun platformer? Mario main series. Want a fun racing game? Mario Kart. Party game? Mario Party.
To be honest, I probably wouldn't have tried half of the Mario titles had thy not had Mario in them, but the reason why I have is because I am more assured that it's generally a more quirky and fun variation to the particular genre, and all in all, I haven't been as disappointed as what I would have been by choosing other random games from the same genres.

why? because that what should games should do! evolve! look at gta 1 and 3! we wouldnt have had the awesomeness of the open world gta games if gta 3 didnt evolve. there are so many examples of that! its just ludacris to think games shouldnt evolve!!

Mario, in general, has evolved.

LBP is all about creativity and user-generated content. |
And most people don't care about that. People generally don't care you can create your own stuff. What they care about is getting a ton of fun content at a low price. This is part of the reason Mario does better than LBP in the market. I say this as a game designer and fan of user generated content. The reality is that isn't want people want.
I might as well also jump in regarding the post you responded to also. LBP and Sackboy are Sony's attempts to jump on Mario platformer and Kart racing. They want Sackboy to become a mascot. Apparently, just doing user generated content didn't cut it, which is why Modnation Racer is pretty much being abandoned for a Sackboy Kart Racing game. It is the same market, just done differently by Sony. Sackboy and LBP are Sony's response to Mario. And you also have Microsoft going with Trials Evolution as an answer to LBP.
I think this thread should be locked as it is causing a lot of trouble right now for all these conflicting opinions. :(
This arguing about story is pointless anyway. Mario is supposed to be story-less.
It's no wonder why Andrespetmonkey likes Uncharted's story and characters better than Mario's, because there isn't any. No arguing that. A lot of people fail to see the point. Mario is Nintendo's way to create games that are easy (not as in difficulty) to play and are accessible to anyone. It's a fun way to spend your time without any bells and whistles. For all intends and purposes, Mario is just an avatar. That approach to gaming works, nearly every time.
Also, people should pay attention to Mario Galaxy (one)'s story. See what happens if you dig a little deeper in the game. Anyone who believes Mario hasn't 'evolved' throughout it's years need to check a retrospect. I guess most of us nowadays are blinded by New Super Mario Bros., which is basically a remake of the NES games. If Nintendo wants story to be on the forefront, they'll use another one of their franchises like Zelda.
Which is also why bananaking21 and even NintendoPie should stop talking about Zelda, as they're talking nonsense. With all due respect, I don't mean to sound harsh. All Zelda games are vastly different and all very story-driven, some of them go very deep. Way deeper than 90% of the other games out there. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant. Excuse me if I'm stepping on anyones toes here, but it's the truth.
Mario being just an avatar explains the large amount of 'Mario games', even if there are only about 20 real Mario games in the character's 30 year existence, depending on definition (Mario World 2 for example; Mario game or not?). The Mario avatar idea, as said by others, also gives a face to games that otherwise be without identity. No more, no less. Oh, and Zelda, by the way, only has 16 games in the almost 26 years of existence.
