I've always found people's interest in women dressing up as male video game characters to be incredibly odd.

It's not really that.
It's that they're hot and they're dressing up as some of our favorite characters. Not much more than that. XD
Some more examples:

Would so buy it!

I mean, what gave Nintendo such a fan devotion, while the others don't get it?
I'm guessing it's because they have been around so long. Things build up after awhile, you know. This is one of those things. (That and their games are SUPER addicting and different from others!)

I don't think so.
I think it's because it grows on us. Starts as kids and keeps on going. It's harder to love something when you're older. And Sony and Microsoft always try for that older edgier - goes where graphics are - gamer.
More important now: when Nintendo fans grow, they teach their toddlers how to love nintendo.
There was a very beautiful comic strip showing that: kids playing mario as kids and then playing Mario Galaxy as parents - like a "Mario then and now" thing - but I can't find it. Anyone knows it?

I kind of know what Comic you are talking about.
There may be people like that but I see many (stupid) parents that don't want their kids having Nintendo because of their views. I'll tell you the story I read about one guy and his kid but I'm too lazy right now. XD
