Yes, it started out as the unofficial abbreviation for the system (I think one of the original Playstation magazines was called PSX) but there's also an actual PSX system released only in Japan, which was a fully functional PS2 with DVR and other multimedia capabilities...

As you can tell, it was mad expensive, so it obviously never saw the light of day outside Japan.

Ahhh! I thought I knew that there was another system, only released in Japan, with a letter behind the "PS." Thanks for clearing up some things!
