I think the sales decline can be attributed to the weak 2012 lineup. A lot of big titles pushed back to 2013 with the only big hitters from memory being ME3 and MP3.

I also wonder how many of the sales of PS3s and Xbox 360s are replacement units. Between upgrades and special units and moving the account to a new machine when the old one dies, those consoles have had another stream of sales.
The Wii, because of its locked memory (meaning some game saves and all DLC cannot be moved to another console), is more likely to be repaired than replaced if the user wants to keep playing the system.
I also wonder if we are not paying the price for stretching the generation out too long.

Most of this is pretty obvious, though still a shock to see how close the xbox360 is to the wii in the US for hardware, it might even pass it within 12 months.
Nintendo should of kept the DS for another year
US first 5 months 2012
xbox360 1.46 million
ps3 1.18 million
wii 0.72 million
All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion
Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

A hardware decline so late in a generation is expected but I am a lil disappointed with the huge drop in software as well.
Lots and lots of good games are coming out for the PS360 constantly. It's sad if they underperform saleswise so that future projects are canned. (Dragon's Dogma, please sell)

That's what NPD attributed it too... I mean, not to metnion it's getting towards the end of the generation. I'd guess software tends to peak in the middle.
Of course then again maybe there are a bunch of people like me who have practically abadoned retail despite formerly buying multiple games a month and now go PC and DIgitial Distrib.
Somehow doubt it though.
