Forums - Nintendo - Iwata not convinced that PS4 and next Xbox will offer a true graphical leap

He makes sense about more money needed to take advantage of the more powerful systems, if many studios are struggling now because they need to sell many copies of their games, what will happen if developing to take advantage of the new consoles become even more expensive?

Agreed.

I been saying a similar thing since significant number ofdevs have closed doors since the HD era has arrived.

It is really up to gamers to keep this industry alive. If we DEMAND huge leaps we should be willing to pay more money for the software to cover development costs. However a lot still cannot afford the high price or want to pay the high price. If the software is shovelware shit, sure let the company go bust because that is what they deserve.

Hes absolutely right
releasing a 500$ machine with the UE4 as an standard is just a suicide right now

Just because the PS4 & Nextbox will have much higher graphical capabilities than their respective predecessars, that doesn't mean developers will be forced to utuilize these capabilities to their fullest potential. There can still be fair amount of developers who decide to settle for using say 50% of the console's power, which I suspect will be quite sufficient for most gamers. Developers will have access to more graphical power, but they won't be required to use it.

Even this generation, many developers have been settling for decent graphics. A lot of developers aren't even capable of utilizing most of the 360's & PS3's power, nor do they care. Gamers have shown that they are more than fine with Call of Duty-like graphics, which I suspect doesn't push current gen consoles much. I suspect it'll become standard next gen for developers to not even try to push the consoles much at all. I'd be happy if they made games as weak as current gen games & I'm sure many others feel the same.

Developers wouldnt struggle, just because a system is more powerful doesnt mean the game has to be a graphic powerhouse, look at Minecraft on xbox360.

Pretty sure even if third party developers (the smaller ones) wont make the leap, I'm sure both Sony and Microsoft will with their next gen systems.

Minecraft is a XBLA game. It is liek comparing apples and oranges.

If next gen game by a big publisher, who can afford to loose money if the project failes makes the game look awesome, there would be pressure for other devs to try and step up their game to come close to matching it.

The evidence is on the HD consoles now, Are there any games coming out now which look as bad as they did during launch? NO because people would not accept that.

doesnt make sense to release a more capable console if you are not going to use those resources...

What are you all babbling about? Rising costs? Developers having issues? That's just Nintendo fanboy talk. Developers haven't been having a hard time at all. We definitely haven't been seeing numerous reports of studios shutting down, people getting laid off, or entire companies going under.

It's all a myth. http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/01/every-game-studio-thats-closed-down-since-2006/

Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp.

In the new Game Informer ther is a good article explaining UE4 cutting down development costs

Notice I said "fair amount of developers". I'm sure they'll still be a lot of big studios, mainly first-party, that will try to push the consoles to their limit to show off it's power.

1.) Minecraft is a XBLA game. It is liek comparing apples and oranges.

2.) If next gen game by a big publisher, who can afford to loose money if the project failes makes the game look awesome, there would be pressure for other devs to try and step up their game to come close to matching it.

1.) Digital is only going to become more relavent, so his Minecraft reference applies here.

2.) Yes, but eventually devs will realize there's a point where they don't have to improve graphics. They'll realize that consumers are fine at a certain level. Example: CoD this gen doesn't push consoles yet it's the HD consoles biggest IP. This reality alone should be enough that devs know they don't have to have cutting edge graphics.

3.) That's because developers simply become more knowledgable about the hardware, not because they feel pressured to have better graphics.
