It never becomes no longer important to please your customer base.
When you think it is no longer important is when someone else takes the opportunity to swoop in and grab all the attention, and when it comes to gaming, mindshare is very important.
Yeah, they might not always have the newest and the latest and greatest to show, but at least it lets your fanbase know "Hey, we are still here guys and we still have things to share with you". I feel this is better than showing in Feb. at CES, June at E3 and then dissappearing.
Even so, let us see what they mean when they speak of local events and such, maybe Microsoft still have something planned between now and early 2013.

yeah sure but even with 250k visitors at gamescom or so which a part of them is the press and only maybe 50k are interested in the 360 or tgs with no clue how many visitors only a very small part of "fans" will be there. i mean, it's not like you in america (not sure where you are from) have something from the gamescom. everything you will see on the internet about it can be shown without gamescom as well to you. it isn't wrong to show "we are still there" on the gamescom, but if 1% of xbox customers/interests will get the opportunity to play a few games a little bit earlier on some conventions or not is really not important in my opinion. it's just too expensive just to reach some fans better than you can with the internet. i think we don't need any of these e3, gamescom and whatever. it's good because the press will report about those big events but i really don't care about it. sure i'm always excited about these events because they show new stuff then but only because they wait to show it there. if there wouldn't be a e3 or whatever i would see exactly the same just without e3 on ign, gameinformer and so on maybe even a month earlier.
about the bolded: yeah maybe their own "fair" like they had plenty of times in the past. forgot the name of it but they had it regularly until last year or so. and with locla events i can only speak about germany but they sometimes have events in munich as example in discoteques to show some stuff.
