Forums - Nintendo - Do you think there's going to be a new 3D Mario in the Mario 64 style?

Hey everyone,

I feel kinda worried about the possibility of there not being a 3d Mario anymore in the vein of Super Mario 64. I played Super Mario 3D Land a little bit and it was good, but it really does not feel like Super Mario 64 or Sunshine. I'd really like them to bring back the exploration Mario games. The Galaxy games were really awesome though I know they were linear, and I just hope they don't forget about those games considering that they announced two (TWO) 2D Mario games recently.

What do you think?

I prefer something in the ways of 3D Land, but sure, there'll probably be another one of those - maybe even bigger in scope.

What Nintendo should do is make Rare type of games to fill that void they left. Collect-a-ton platformers in huge worlds and stages. No one is doing it, they could be the first to do it and do it right

That would be perfect for a new IP.

For me: Exploration Mario > Every other Mario

I really hope they make another one. =)

I would hope so. Perhaps with Wii U leading with 2D Mario, they can focus their 3D efforts on not trying to bridge the gap between 2D and 3D Mario as they did with Galaxy 2 and 3D land (which were good in their own right, but lacking the special something of Galaxy 1 and 64 and to a lesser extent, Sunshine), and make a 3D Mario that will really kick our asses.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I'd like to see them make a new game in the vein of 3D Land, but with more open-ness.

To be specific, what I mean is that there should be a myriad of paths to the flag, not just one single path. It should still work off the "get to the flag" mechanic, which is a better design for platforming... but there should be different ways there, kind of like how there'd be various pipes, secrets, etc, that would vary the path you could take in 2D Mario games.

I also would love to see the Mario Galaxy type game expanded upon... but I say they should establish a new subfranchise for it.

A true 3D Mario based on exploration + WiiU graphics = GOD

Answer:
No i dont thinks so, since 2D Mario games are by far the best selling Mario games (apart from Mario kart), from a bussines perspective it wouldnt make sense to spend a lot of resources on a game thats not going to sell as well as another one that requires less resources to be made and still going to sell better...

Galaxy got the "exploration Mario spot on. Like damn, spot on. Friggin loved that game.

What the Mario series needs most is a spinoff of Sunshine starring FLUDD

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

I always thought it was brilliant concept to have a platformer in a tropical resort setting with water being at the center of gameplay. But I also always thought that Nintendo should have placed another character to star in that type of game besides Mario( like in Yoshi's island or Luigi's mansion).
'Toad's vacation time' or 'Peach Beach' might be good XD. Maybe even a new IP.
