It's hard for people to appreciate this stuff from where they stand now; a lot of them weren't there.

Man.

Part of the thing is that the advertising very aggressively tried to address teenagers, and it alienated grown-ups at least partially because it was so childish.

Well.

SEGA's advertising was worse, but Nintendo had that too - they just didn't attack SEGA by name

I'm surprised so many people think the PS3 vs the 360 is the are biggest rivalry. Today's fanboy arguements are nothing compared to the Sega, nintendo fanboy arguements. We did our trolling in the school playground, face to face, like a boss!

with out a doubt. The commercials at the time did nothing but call out their competitors and bash them. Nothing like we see now.

HA!  Sales superiority, maybe.  GC and Xbox were better consoles, though.  There was fanboyism last gen, it was just limited in scope because, aside from the Dreamcast, the PS2 came out first, established a huge lead, and kept it without question, leaving little room for hope or fear from the fanbases regarding an upset. 

PS2 was the superior console both in sales and games. Now if you're talking bout graphics, thats somethin else. I dont think there was any fanboyism last gen. Can you find me any Xbox or GC songs or articles like "GC haz no gaemz"? I also cannot find any threads on the internet from the period of 2000-2006 arguing why console x or y sucks or owns.

 

I bought my Gamecube in 2003, it was my first console last gen. Then I bought a PS2 becoz there were no GTA or Onimushas on the GC. And when the original xbox came out, I thought it was cool.
