Forums - Gaming - Wii U is the beginning of the Next Gen. Microsoft and Sony are observing and taking notes.

The 5th Generation of gaming consoles were defined by optical media.  The expansion of optical media meant that games were no longer confined to cartridges and could be more cheaply produced.

The 6th Generation of gaming consoles were defined by online gaming.  The advent of online gaming in the Xbox paved the way for the next generation and allowed Microsoft to gain a solid foothold in the console gaming business.  It could also be argued that this generation began the migration from gaming to entertainment console.  Both Sony and Microsoft included DVD drives, as well Microsoft through a supported application, allowed for the streaming of music from PCs to the console.

The 7th Generation of gaming consoles is defined by motion controls.  Gimmick, fad, or otherwise, motion controls are here to stay.  The two most successful companies with motion control experiences are Nintendo and Microsoft and they're going into the next generation in a good position in regard to casual games.  Sony on the other hand, not so much.   The promise of 60FPS 1080p gaming never materialized because of the limitations of both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but they still moved the bar forward.  This generation will also mark the second phase of the transformation of a gaming console from a strictly gaming device to a media/entertainment device.

The 8th Generation will be defined by expansion of the console into other forms of entertainment and communication.  Yes, I'm predicting that the 8th Generation of consoles will mark the end of the traditional gaming console.  It's already happening across all platforms, but it'll significantly change consoles in the coming generation.

Success will define who wins and loses.  Everyone will need to maintain their core audiences while expanding not only within the gaming sphere (social games) but into entertainment and communication spheres.

This is exactly what I've been saying and agree 100%. This is also why I've been saying Apple and Google will become major players in this gen as their products naturally include core gaming. Its also why I keep pushing that Nintendo and Sony need to embrace Android as without it, they stand to lose a lot of marketshare to MS followed by Apple/Google(OEMs).

Of course Wii U is a next-gen console. Generations aren't measured by power....

What are.. ? Sega cd and saturn are both considered 5 gen..

But wii-u is pure next gen.. and next gen will be defined by HD (becurse the biggest player enter, And the HD tv now have a big marked share) And offcorse the ekstra screen..

But there is one more thing you may not consider.. Virtuel reality... Wii U is made for it... (all nintendo have to do is make a upad, shaped as a headset.. whitout touch..) And also MS and sony expering with it..

VR will chance the way we game.. and the way we live.. This comming gen could very well be the one..and then it will be the VR Gen instead..:)

Being wholly dependent on the Genesis, the Sega CD was 4th gen, as was the 32X, and other contemporaries like the NeoGeoCD or PCEngine CD (TurboCD)

Sure. Gamers should know that this is just the begining and the reason why the console isn't being pushed to its capabilities (not even talking being maxed out) is because the market is not responding to the WiiU's graphical capabilities, for reasons that are understandable.

The problem for Sony is it is fractured.  On one hand it'll want to promote its SmartTVs.  On the other, it'll want to promote the PlayStation for gaming.  It can't seem to decide what the future is and for whom what future exists.  This lack of vision, if not corrected, will in the long run damage Sony's business.

Neither Microsoft nor Nintendo have this problem.

Nintendo's only concern is being able to offer a console that can host the services they want to provide.  The requirements for that are changing from proprietary Flash-based applications or Silverlight applications to HTML5-based applications.  In that respect, I don't believe Nintendo needs to adopt Android, they just need to be able to support modern HTML5 applications.  Nintendo's major limitation right now is it is coming from behind in all aspects except gaming.  They have the most to gain.

Microsoft has a fair amount to lose, but personally I feel it has the best position, with Sony not so far in second.  Microsoft's biggest obstacle to success are content partners, one issue both Microsoft and Nintendo share.

Apple has already said it has no plans to get into the gaming business, but we'll see.  If people start developing games for Apple TV and they take off, then who knows what Apple will support.  I think Google at the moment is happy with selling software and letting other people figure out the business model.

Google TV has not done so well, so we'll see I guess.  I think Google is more interested in its mobile market than it is with home TV.

I was reading another thread and couldn't help to ask this question: If the Wii U is not NextGen, what is it? Whatever the Xbox720 and PS4 do?

It is easy now to describe what this ending generation was about. Social gaming. Online multiplayer and local multiplayer. Nintendo did it with motion controllers and Microsoft and Sony followed. Microsoft was the leader in the online gaming department and Nintendo was the weakest on that field.

I dont understand why some people is expecting Nintendo to be more like the Xbox or like the Playstation. Well, aside from the WiiU Pro controller, which I loved, I think Nintendo is doing a great job at being what it is: Nintendo. Maybe they are catching up with the online gaming aspect, but that is just because it makes sense from the social gaming perspective they are trying to promote since the gamecube era.

And it is only reasonable to me, to see a more conservative approach, not taking a lot of risks like they did with the Wii.

So I think we cannot define this generation as the High Definition consoles generation because we will be describing only around a half of the market. Instead, I think it was a more the generetion of social gaming, wether it was online or offline.

But can we really anticipate what the hell defines the next generation before all the big three release their hardware?

And if we could, what do you think is going to define the next generation?

My favorite answer so far. I wish we had more like it. Unfortunately, it seems like I hurt a lot of feelings with this thread: I didn't mean to.

Sure, I like Nintendo, but it's not like I hate  Microsoft or Sony. I have and enjoy an XboX 360 and I hope Sony doesn't rush the PS4 because I may get a PS3 in the near future and I will like to get at least another 3 years of games for that console. But I do hope this guys come up with a good answer to the WiiU. I just can't imagine what would it be. More graphics? More motion controls?

And I have also read some people willing to have right now the next xbox or playstation, just because Nintendo had.a headstart. Well, I say can still enjoy more of the same from what they call the HD twins. What's the rush? The Wii is aging badly, so yeah, I like the updated version. And it looks like Nintendo know where they are heading. Great. That will put preassure on the other two to come up with something really cool. So yeah, I hope Microsoft and Sony take very good notes. It may be now their turn to take risks...
