Forums - Sony Discussion - Discussing PS4 hardware and manufacturing price

If sony released a $400 Base Model (Lowest HDD Space) and maybe another version for 50 bucks more with a bigger HDD Drive. Then i think its a worthy price point.. cant see it going 300 or less thats crazy.. and plus the 400 bucks would be an improvement over the laughable launch price of the ps3...

I so agree with you. I would even pay 499 for a premium model.

I'm inclined to believe that Sony is a rational company that is making decisions in their long term best interests ...

As a result of that, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony use a lot of the engineering from the PS3 in the PS4 to make their life easier. Basically, use a modified Cell processor, a GPU similar in performance to the Radeon HD7750, 2GB of GDDR5 memory, Blu-Ray drive and (probably) a terrabyte hard drive. When released in Q4 of 2013 it will have a manufacturing price somewhere in the $300 to $400 range, and Sony could afford to sell it for $400 even if it has an "innovative" controller and/or a packed in game.

Few people seem to remember that you need to include cost to the retailer!

With many products if it cost you $500 to make, you should sell it to your retailer at $1000 and they will sell for $2000. (Unless you are Apple, who has even pricier mark ups.)

Anybody know what the markup is on gaming consoles? (I.E. what does Gamestop have to pay Sony for a PS3, that they sell for say $299). I saw 5% but that seems much to low, as most things are 100%-300%.

i've heard the mark up for games consoles is almost nothing, because as the consoles manufactures also do, they make money on software and to get the software selling they need to get as much hardware out as possible.

$599 was expensive in 2006 for a gaming console.
$599 is expensive in 2012 for a gaming console.
$599 will be espensive in 2013 for a gaming console.

I say $399 is ok.

I'm in complete agreement that $400 dollars is the highest they should consider releasing the PS4. I bought my PS3 for $420 in October of 2007. I bought it on Craigslist from a guy who had bought it 3 months prior only to go for the Wii. I think I got the better deal of that trade. It's still alive and kicking.

$400 dollars, not accounting tax, is a much as I'm willing to pay for a new console.

3rd Revision

Processor:

AMD Steamroller APU

The CELL processor will stay on board for BC. (Maybe for the first 2 or 3 years)

Ram:

2GB DDR3 1600MHz for the APU [1GB dedicated to OS and multimedia/multitasking applications] 1GB will be available for developers.

GPU

AMD Radeon HD7850 derived GPU with 2GB GDDR5
Integrated GPU in APU to be next gen?

Bluray drive

BD drive will stay but will be the latest (speed). Installations will be optional.

Storage

Sony should go flash. (16Gb?) This would bring down costs and since installations would be optional, it would be completely up to the consumer if he/she wants to purchase an HDD.

PS4 manufacturing to cost maybe $400. PS4 to retail at $400; break even or small loss.
It will also need to launch with Killzone "4" and Uncharted "4" as it would be a perfect way to market the PS"4".
Gran Turismo 6 would also be needed.

With the latest rumor, I may be right :D

Except the above GPU is starting to seem ridiculous to me. Sony will have to go for something else to make the machine affordable.

GPU

Custom embedded AMD Sea Islands GPU (crossfire possibility perhaps)

^Seems more likely.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

2nd revision:

Hardware Specifications
Central Processing Unit (CPU) AMD QC @ 3.XGHz
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) HD 7870 OR HD 8850
Memory  4GB min
Storage Capacity 320gb/500gb OR 32gb flash/320gb

OR

Hardware Specifications
Central Processing Unit (CPU) A10-5800K - QC@3.8GHz(APU)
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) HD 7770 + 7660D(APU)
Memory  4GB min
Storage Capacity 320gb/500gb OR 32gb flash/320gb

Of course all components will be modified in some respect.

Price quesstimates (for 2nd spec sheet):

A10-5800K - £70

HD 7770 - £50

Blu-ray drive - £20

RAM - £20

Storage - £15-25

Other - £125

Total manufacturing price: £300

At retail: £300/350 | US$350/400 | ¥30-35K

They would be profiting at launch in Europe, losing money on systems in Japan and USA.

OR

I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I lol at people thinking Sony is going to go the cheap route. Sure its the smart thing to do. But seeing the Vita specs its obvious Sony has no plans to change their business strategy: highest cost and highest end.

PS4 will be $499, for better or for worse.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I also don't believe PS4 will be weak, but Sony is stubborn, they will follow the same route taking heavy losses.  It will be a $399 launch, there is no new tech they are pushing (that I'm aware of?) to drive up the price. @ $499, better have 2 yrs of PS+ & a bundled game.

The PSV is not "The highest cost and Highest end". It's not that expensive - the 3DS is especially cheap. The tech is relatively high end, but it definitely doesn't take a large loss. The PSV doesn't cost an extravagant amount like the PS3 did... it doesn't even compare. In fact, the PS3 is an outlier in Sony's history of games console pricing. Sony can't afford to take PS3 scale losses, and all the rumours indicate a sensibly powered console (off the shelf parts, like the PSV) at a sensible price (latest rumour).

So, what are you basing this off?

And who are you lolling at? Who is saying they're going the cheap route?

I know I'm stalking you today... I swear it's just coincidence.
