Forums - Gaming - Crytek: All our future games will be free-to-play

No longer interested in your products then, Crysis 2 MP was fun, but I bought it for the SP.

It's technically still possible to do single-player games but with a significant online component that could work using the free-to-play. Diablo 3 (OK, not the best example as you 1. pay for it and 2. has a whole host of problems) can be played single player but with a constant online connection. Another example would be Age of Empires Online (which is F2P), which again can be played single-player with story based scenarios.

Money is made from micro-transactions. I remember reading somewhere that with most F2P games, only 10% of the user actually spend any money, but that's usually enough to turn over a healthy profit.

if its free to play, how they make money?

Usually microtransactions. Even if only 10% of the users playing purchase premium items, it's usually enough for a healthy profit. Having lots of small items like hats, weapons etc. can also bring in decent cash. The potential for in-game advertising is also there.

How would this work with singleplayer games?

my guess is that Crytech are getting out of the singleplayer business in the future

Not necessarily. It's still possible to have a single-player component using the F2P model.

Well Crytech would be the first to do it in a AAA setting which I would love to see. I have my doubts tho

Crytek are the ones that bought Free Radical (and thus TimeSplitters rights) yes?

If so then eugh, that has put another damper on getting a decent TS4.

ah thanks for clearing tha tup for me. I don't mind this concept of small item microtransactions.

Now I know what he meant by EA and ACTIVISION milking it. They literally release an incomplete game and sell you about 7GBS of addons, hence the dilema people seem to have with the WiiU with its builtin 8GB SD FLASH only.

Call me crazy but personally that kind of stuff pisses me off on consoles as ideally I would like to be able to reinstall the addons at a later date, perhaps 10 years from now (like people do with zelda or goldeneye) just to see how the game stacks up for them, bu tthere is no gurantee that these patches/updates will be available on the next gen online system from the console makers. Even buggy console games piss me off. as an example, how will I patch skyrim in the future? epsecially the PS3 version, since it is so busted. PC is not so bad because the patches will always be there.

One good example of this for me is TRIBES on PC. A classic game. everynow and then I install the old one and download all the addonds created. I doubt I would be able to do this so simply on a console as the online service probably would be shut down.

The reason I played console games is because I enjoyed the convenience knowing a game will work out of the box. The mroe advanced the tech gets and the more milking they do the less reason there is for me to buy multiplatform games which IU can also get on PC.

I think nextGen for me will  most likley be buying console exlcusives only.

To sum it up, I hope consoles don't end up suffering to much from this concept. I rather pay upfront for a nice single campaign game knowing I can replay it then have an incomplete multiplayer experience relying on paid addons to get the full benefit of the game. I am happy to buy small additional game items 9such as those you mentioned) that don't prevent me enjoying the game to its full if I chose not to have them,
