Forums - Sony - The Last Of Us Demo Was Not Scripted (Naughty Dog Claims)

Tagged games:

Just watching the E3 Pulse show and in an interview with someone from Naughty Dog, he does mention that there are something called "pinch points" which are scripted reactions when you run into certain scenarios. The supposed "pinch point" in the gameplay demo was when Joel heard those people for the first time while he was by that rooftop greenhouse. The "pinch point" automatically made him crouch and hide behind the cover close by. What's interesting is that it is very smoothly done and matches gameplay.

Everything from that point is gameplay. He explained the method that allows for such cinematic melee by describing something that calculates the surrounding physics so it takes into account a desk or other objects during melee and utilizes appropriate melee between your character and opponent. So smashing your opponents head against a desk just happens and vice versa, or in instances towards the end when Joel gets hit with an object and falls to the floor to receiving a strangling. I'm guessing if that open floor wasn't there he'd be up against a wall or such.

"Pinch points" might very well be a good things since it serves as a form of AI for your character as well working as a instant reaction to things like hearing strangers, first thing you'd want to do is hide right? Essentially your character would take advantage of split second decisions that you as a person sitting in their living room observing from a third person view might not be able to execute in the same fashion as if you were actually in the game.

That demonstration was amazing, dont care if it was scripted or not, it was as epic as Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Mario Bros. 2!

LOL!

Is this guy for real? haha

Super Mario Bros U and New Super Mario Bros. 2 was only epic in it's sheer banality, predictability, and boringness.

I have read enough variety in description from the variety of people that have seen or played the same scenario have different memorable events and sequences.

All Naughty Dog has said throughout is the biggest thing they are investing in is the AI as everything else they had already developed to 10/10 level with Uncharted 3 for current hardware.

On second thought, I might be wrong about where the "pinch point" was in that playthough, or something. I don't know anymore and will have to play it to find out. One thing is for certain though, this game has some amazing AI.

I think The Last of Us showed how next gen will be.

I dont expect next gen to be that much improved graphic wise but i think next gen will improve aniomations and KI by a big margin.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

the demo was pre determined and scripted to act on player specific scenarios

why do you bother posting these shallow one-liners when you know A.) you haven't done any research and don't know what you're talking about and B.) you know you'll ignore any replies that prove you wrong.

it was even scripted on the fallon show
