Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Did Microsoft just make Nintendo's Wii U tablet irrevelant?

Windows mobile OS has a tiny market share, and I can't see people buying a new device for this functionality, nor can I see developers sinking too much time supporting it.

The pre-E3 of Nintendo direct was deliberately shown yesterday just for this reason besides most Nintendo's will most likely focus on the their controller whereas the Smart Glass is for the most part an extension of Kinect.

If anything, Microsoft may be doing most of the marketing for Wii U's controller :)

They said it applies to any tablet and smartphone.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

The only thing that can make Wii U relevant or irrevelant is the games. Will I be able to play Mario, Metroid and Zelda, Kriby, Donkey Kong and Smash Bothers on any device using Xbox Smart Glass?

Proof that Nintendo really shoul just make games and hardware accessories.

No. That means that people buy gaming systems to play games on it. Be it Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or the Pope. If Microsoft launches an eight cores, dual sticks, four shoulder buttons, back touch panel and front capacity touch screen with 3D output portable game device it means that the Vita is irrelevant? No. Because I want to play Uncharted, Gravitity Rush, LBP and killzone on my handheld.

My point is that for 2 generations it appears that Nintendo is releasing underpowered consoles that what makes them different is the fact they have a different type of control.  There is nothing that the Wii did that could not have been done on the PS3 or 360 with Nintendo releasing a controller with the game.   Now with the Wii U to play the next Mario you need tp purchase an underpowered console that has a new control scheme.  Why not simply make the new controller and have it work with more powerful consoles.

ah so this:

"the company announced that from this Christmas gamers will be able to pair Windows 8 powered tablets and PCs, as well as, Phones with the console to watch movies, play games, and use it as a remote control.”

Was probably just trying to push Windows 8 devices

True, but the number of people with a Windows Phone and Xbox 360 likely already more than what the Wii U will have by this time next year.  Not to mention you dont need a Windows Phone or Windows 8 Tablet.

I haven't watched the video but....

Did the Kinect make Wii irrelevant? No.

Is the wii still relevant?

Nah, the wii only sold 100 million units, it's not relevant at all.....

Not at all. You have to buy both a 360 AND a tablet/phone/etc. This will cost you between 300 - 600 dollars. Also, it does not double as a controller as WiiU's tablet controller does. Also, it doesn't come with the xbox, so developers will not HAVE to use it in any way. Nothing worthy will come out of this. ON TO THE NEXT ONE!!!

We were discussing post-kinect release.

And by the time the Wii U comes out there will be more people with an Xbox 360 and any of the devices that Smart Glass supports than the Wii U will sell in its 1st year. So what should developers target?
