Forums - Microsoft - Did Microsoft just make Nintendo's Wii U tablet irrevelant?

Yes I have looked at ZombiU of course but unfortunately Zombie games are ten a penny, gimmicks won't change that. Red steel was a first person shooter with Wii motion controls.....the game was shit and the controls didn't increase immmersion whatsoever. I looked to Nintendo's first party offerings to keep me interested at their conference and all I got was Nintendoland and a upscaled wii version of Pikmin.

Okay dude, you're out of whack. First of all, ZombiU =/= Red Steel. Did you watch both videos?? A great amount of effort was put into making the survival horror more immersive.

The "gimmicks" you mention are not gimmicks, they have a dedicated purpose, to increase immersion in a genre that desperately requires it (survival horror). What you see as a gimmick, real gamers (sorry you deserve it) see it as a real added value to a game. See this article from Kotaku:

http://kotaku.com/5916078/zombiu-sprinkles-dead-island-with-a-liberal-dose-of-dark-souls-in-other-words-its-rad

Even if Zombie games are ten a penny, good ones are rare as diamonds.

A positive preview does not mean that it's a good game. As we all know how neverdead and dead island turned out... Bad to average.

I think it is indisputable that while they have a dedicated purpose, they can indeed be done on a regular controller, albeit in-game. Yes it's cool. Is it $350 cool though? I'm leaning towards no. It adds things that are unnessesary to something that already works, so to speak. So yes, it does seem to be a gimmick.

^Well, then beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I consider what they did with the WiiU pad for ZombiU to be something that smartglass does not render irrelevant for a long time, and that is anything but a gimmick, but the path towards ever increasing immersion. Immersion is the thing I strive for as a gamer, since I'm a pretty retro gamer at the root. Games like Metroid and Bioshock appeal to me, so does a game like Uncharted, because it sucks me in. ZombiU's footage did the same for me, and most of that, appart from the 1-life hardcore mechanic, was done thanks to what you call gimmicks, on the padlet.

I have no problem disagreeing with you starkly, since I value my opinion more than yours.

so because the wiiU controller isn't rendered automatically outdated by smartglass that means that it's not a gimmick? Let me ask you: why do you think nintendo keeps introducing such "odd" capabilities to their systems? Because it works. People eat that **** up like candy because it is a new feature and it's different, not because it enhances gaming. Dual screens, motion cameras, motion controls.. They are novel, sure. But they are gimmicks. People get tired of them and they are not condusive to a long term playstyle. In the end people always go back to the standard m&k or controller input because it provides freedom, whereas "gimmicks" are limited to what they can do which is less. Look no further than the Pro controller. The wiiU controller itself is fine. The functionality, however, still needs to evolve. And gimmick-o was his name-o.

If these things immerse you though, have fun with it.

How about you back that up bah. I see no constructive feedback or debate here other than the fact that you disagree but don't know enough about what you're talking about to construct anything coherant to add.

Thank you for confirming what I already knew.

Not about the being a fanboy with some vendetta. I clearly said that "motion cameras" were gimmicks as well *cough* kinect *cough*

I never mentioned kiddies, soccer moms, and I never said their hardware is underpowered. Their hardware as of late is gimmicky though, and I stand by that opinion because of what the definiton of gimmicky actual conprises.

It's not nintendo, it's unnecessary means of controller input which convolute a very simple process.

So no, you confirmed the fact that you have nothing to add and that you don't know what you're talking about and have to result to insults in order to make you feel like you're important.. So good day.

what are you actually trying to say about the pro controller?

That nintendo is offering it because it is a traditional controller without any motion control, touch screen, laser pointer, toaster, or camera. I was trying to say that nintendo has to offer it because a large chunk of gamers don't want all this unnecessary stuff, they just want to game unimpeded by motions or actions that can easily and more effectively be done by a button press. And because of this, nintendo has 3 completely different types of controllers you have to buy for the wiiU.

sorry if the words got sort of jumbled.
