Forums - Gaming Discussion - Asian videogames - who creates them, who plays them?

I'm writing an essay about videogames in East-Asia. I'm looking for reliable statistics about Asian game production and consumption.

Do non-Chinese people play Chinese games? Do Chinese people play a lot of non-Chinese games? Did this balance change in the last years?
And you can replace 'China' with every other East-Asian country.

The statistics on this site seem to be divided in American/European (France/Germany)/Japan and 'other'. I'm interested in the East-Asian 'other', can someone here help me find statistics about those countries?

And if you know any interesting articles about East-Asia, please post a link to them :)

Thank you very much!

For sales related questions you can ask our Sales posters: Kowenicki, Ethomaz, Vic Viper, Acevil, RolStoppable, and multiple others. They would probably know. Also we actually have a writer here. He is the one who does all the articles on the front page. TRunksw or something close to that. Good luck Sori...HarryBarry.

Okay, I'm gonna search for their names and will PM then. Who is Soriku?

That is just a joke. He has the most posts of all time here I believe. Since you pushed out 50 in a few hours.

Well, I tried to create a new thread, but I wasn't allowed to post one because I didn't have 50 posts yet. So I decided to create them... For Science!

I've posted my question on the walls of the members you mentioned, thanks for the help! I hope they'll reply and be able to help me.

South Korea is the only country besides Japan from where we get sales data of official trackers and even then only a few times a year. The PC is the most popular gaming platform.

Chinese games are only really played in China. For one, because China is restrictive on imports from other countries and two, because Chinese games are usually cheap knockoffs of popular Japanese and Western games. Everyone outside of China would rather play the originals than the copycats.

Japan and South Korea are the only Asian countries with good software sales, all other countries are dominated by rampant piracy, so it's next to impossible to find any market data. And without such data It's complete guesswork whether Japanese or Western games are more popular among gamers in these countries.

Thanks for the information! I already suspected something like this. Could you maybe link to an article about this subject? (Lack of good software sales, rampant piracy) I'm writing an essay about the subject and proper sources are useful :) Thank you!

I cannot really comment on a huge amount regarding gaming related to China, as I am not familiar. However if you are researching a market that might have the potential to be very huge, look no further than South Korea. Nexon for example has a pretty good grasp of the Free-To-Play market and really I would say started that formula.

(also rol gave a better answer).

About Indian Market.

The estimated sales are (early 2011 figures)...

PS2: 650k
PSP: 235k
PS3: 95k

The last article about the Indian Market I have...

http://archive.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/article.jsp?article_id=116008&cat_id=899

Oct 2011. There are just one part about sales "Elsewhere in the world, the PS3 and X360 are virtually neck and neck, but in India the PS3 is dominant."

So  PS3 sold more than 360 in India.

More about India.

http://www.retailinasia.com/article/tech/consumer-electronics/2010/10/sales-playstation-india-impacted-high-taxes

"In the console gaming market in India, Sony Computers has a market share of 75 to 80 percent and sold around 2.5 lakh (250,000) units of the PlayStation last financial year."

So in 2009 FY (Mar 2009 to Mar 2010) the PlayStation brand sold 250k units (PS2 are the best selling I guess) with 75-80% of the market.

Thank you! :D Hadn't found much about India yet.

It kind of sucks that there aren't big, systematical collections of data (like the yearly charts here on vgchartz http://www.vgchartz.com/yearly/2011/Japan/ ) for the rest of Asia, but with your help I can at least know something :)

It's interesting to see that Sony dominates the eastern markets, while Xbox is doing well on the western markets. I thought more Japanese games were PS3-exclusive, compared to the Xbox (Final Fantasy, etcetera). I wonder what kind of games Indian gamers play.

Thanks for the help! :D

Here you can see that Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore all have some Steam servers. I would love to know what kind of games they buy...
