Forums - Gaming - Describe the scaling system you use to rate games.

I've been looking a lot of people's game collections and I begun to wonder what each score means. That's why I've created this thread, so everyone can come in & describe the reasoning behind their scores. Please use whatever point system you'd like & then maybe list some examples. I'll go first.

10 - Masterpiece - Demon's Souls, Left 4 Dead 2, Red Dead Redemption
9 - Amazing - Portal 2, Dead Space, Batman, Ratchet & Clank: ACiT
8 - Great - Deus Ex: HR, Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 2, Halo: Reach
7 - Good -Grand Theft Auto 4, Bad Company 2, Black Ops, Uncharted 3
6 - Okay - Modern Warfare 2, inFamous series, Resistance series
5 - Boring - Assassin's Creed series, Farcry 2
4 - Bad - Need 4 Speed Pro Street (PSP)
3 - Painful - I think Naught Bear would fall here.
2 - Barely works - Haven't played a game this bad.
1 - Not a game - Haven't played a game this bad.

I like to use a ten point system, because the higher point system are too precise and my opinion may change a few .1 points every once in a while. Better to just use the ten point system. Any precise measures should be presented through text imo.

Now you!

Similar to yours... 5 being the middle of the road (ie a game that I might recommend if someone is a big fan of the subject or genre, but without that extra pull it is a mediocre game)

My collection on here is of course skewed toward the high end of the scale, but that's because I don't buy games on a whim, and generally know I will like a game before I buy it, so while I don't have many games rated below 7, that doesn't mean I use the scale reviewers use where 7/7.5 is the middle of the road.

I applaud your use of a 10 point (well 11 point if 0 is included) scale... I think proper reviewers should simplify their score systems more. On a personal rating system though I do believe it is possible to differentiate between games on a 'more precise' scale, which is why I use the full breadth of the system on VGC. There is a difference between personally rating a game collection and giving a score based on reviewing a game though, 100 point scales are not a 'more accurate' measure of the quality of a game based on reviews... especially when different people are involved in reviewing from the same publication.

1 - Abysmal - Haven't experienced

2 - Appaling - in the way a bad B-movie can be so bad it's funny. In comparison a 1 is just a frustratingly broken disaster - Rogue Warrior

3 - Mostly Awful - though there may be something appealing it's still not worth playing - Not experienced

4 - Poor - May have a good few things of worth, but it's flaws are still very prominent - Not experienced

5 - Mediocre - Rarely worth buying, though some may find it mildly enjoyable - L.A. Noire

6 - Respectable - Worth getting the occasional 6 if it seems like something right up your alley - Midnight Club: LA, Football manager

7 - Good - Worth picking up if you like the genre or premise - Dead Island, Need for speed: Most wanted, Civilization Revolution

8 - Great - Must buy for most gamers, always worth having a look - Pokemon Fire red, God of War 2, InFamous, Resistance

9 - Excellent - Genre defining, must buy in most cases - Uncharted 2/3, Civilization V, Half-life 2, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4

10 - Outstanding - industry gems, unforgettable experiences - Ico, Goldeneye, Journey, GTA: Vice city (Uncharted 2, Portal 2 and LittleBigPlanet are very close)

Note: I haven't included the .5s, I use those a lot and there is a significant difference between them but I didn't want such a long post.

Decent is worse than mediocre?

Lol I didn't know what word to use.

What would be more fitting?

I've tried to formulate a system for scoring a game, but haven't successfuly implemented it yet... but I'd say:

10. Perfection!
9. Masterpiece
8. Amazing
7. Great
6. Good
5. Solid
4. Average
3. Bad
2. Major Suckage
1. I HATE THIS GAME!
0. KILL ME! NOW!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I don't know but decent is usually more good than bad. While mediocre is usually more bad than good. Maybe just switch decent and mediocre.

I think of mediocre as right down the middle, I'll think of something soon
