Sega and Double Fine Announce 'The Cave' With Ron Gilbert saying that:

“An adventure game so odd and compelling that it can only be described as odd and compelling,” says the press release, “The Cave will be coming to consoles and PCs for digital download worldwide in early 2013.”

“If you enjoy rappelling, spelunking and dark rocky caverns then be prepared to be disappointed! And then intrigued. And then AMAZED. And then disappointed again, but only for a minute. Then relieved, amused, bewildered, excited, and satisfied. In that order.”

“The concept of The Cave has been bouncing around in my head for many, many years,” said Ron Gilbert. “I’m thrilled to be working with amazingly talented folks at Double Fine.”

This looks so ridiculously good. I am beyond excited.

So this isn't the double fine adventure? this is something else?

It's something else. The point of Kickstarter is to circumvent the need for publishers. To be given 3.3million then go to Sega would be the equivalent of Double Fine pulling out their virtual wang and slapping every backer in the face with it.

Double Fine created the game, and they are partnering with Sega as a distributor
and a support for the game. Not a bad idea to get gamers to notice your game
if Sega supports it and has their name on it too.

Beautiful!

Okay, another one of those platformers...

Meh

The idea of anything Dan Gilbert ever does being "meh" is beyond me utterly, especially something he's doing in concert with Tim Schafer.  A throwback to the days when video games were about intelligence and charm and fun and not blowing up 5 million aliens with a laser cannon mindlessly, being done by two pioneers of the industry.  Between them, these are the guys responsible for Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Grim Fandango, and the list goes on and on.

A guy with a purple tentacle profile pic should know better than most other people that the name of the game developer he adores is Ron, not Dan Gilbert.

And I agree with NobleTeam360 on this one: Meh.

Reason: This looks just like another one of those dozens of downlodable sidescrolling platformers we got and will get this gen. I don't say that this game will be bad (how could I), but imo this genre is almost as packed as FPS this gen (and almost as overrated imo, but I'm probably pretty alone with this opinion). Castle Crashers, Battle Block Theater, Outland, Super Meat Boy, Scarygirl, Braid, Limbo, Trine, Trine 2, 'Splosion Man, Ms. 'Splosion Man, Rayman Origins, Sonic 4, Fez, N+, Bionic Commando Rearmed...just to name some of the best known of released and upcoming DL platformers.

Ron Gilbert never created a bad game imo, but not everything he's been working on is as special as some fans and critics claim (e.g. DeathSpank).

The Cave is definitely not the game Gilbert/Schafer fans like me are waiting for. That's the upcoming, untitled, fan-founded (US$ 3.3 million from 87.000 people), hopefully Scumm(TM)-tastic point&click adventure game.
