Forums - Gaming - John Carmack: “lots of 30hz games” in the next gen

Tagged games:

Perfectly fine with 30fps games next-gen as long as they have no screen tearing, sufficient AA and never have a resolution lower than 720p. (Preferably native 1080p of course)

It's the eye candy, playercount and AI improvements I'm looking for next-gen.

Many people here were hoping to see games at 1080p and 60fps not only for the PS4/nextbox but even with the WiiU, so hearing that from Carmack is a bit of a disappointment.

However I'm more interested in why it won't happen. If devs won't be able to do it because they put more things on screen (enemies, bigger worlds, etc.) then it's fine, but if it's a matter of hardware not being strong enough then we'll have a problem.

60fps will only become standard when the power of the hardwar far outstrips developers capabilities to create better assets and effects, which isn't anywhere close for AAA. There are 60fps games on the PS1, there will be games that can't even maintain 30fps next gen even if it is 10x more powerful than current gen consoles.

So the first games to appear on the new consoles, mostly ports from PS360 games that don't make full use of the capacity of the consoles will be the ones that will be able reach 60fps. Nothing unexpected.

@JustThatGamer. Don't worry, I didn't skip your post. And I agree with what you and others have said. 60 fps is almost a necessity for racing and fighting games, but it's not that necessary for other genres.

well that and games that the developers have decided that 60fps is more important than other visual and scope aspects of their games. Just like every other console generation, basically only people that know nothing of the technical side of games actually thought that 60fps would be a standard feature of next gen console games.

60Hz is over rated... carmack is right, but i too think he is far from being legendary...

His work in the early days of 3D graphics is legendary, hence his legendary status.

Well, this gen ALL games could've been 60fps at 1080p... IF the developers would've been willing to sacrifice graphics. But they decided they prefer improving graphics.

I don't see how it will be any different next gen. I'm sure most developers will rather have amazing graphics than games at 60fps and 1080p.

I wouldn't mind 1080p graphics at 30fps but with 4 or 8xAA.

Well 60 fps is needed for fast paced games (Quake 3 anyone?) but most games are more then OK at 30 IMO. If its aint an ultra sleek FPS, then 60 shouldent be mandatory... oh and brawlers, I want my Tekken 60 FPS at least

in that prepective... yes... but now, he is far from those days... Quake I and II was awesome, but after that... nothing worth of that kind of status IMO.

Saying 30 hz instead of 30 fps is the biggest fail of Carmack's career.

Screen refreshing at 30 hz is unwatchable but a game running at 30 fps is playable fine, as long as it runs on a 50/60 hz display and each game frame draws twice.
