people will be quick to bash pachter (you guys always do) but when next gen releases and everyone does terrible please remember your statements.

What if they do terrible for reasons different than Pachter's inane blather?

you'd be making excuses and diversions to the real issue.

And all the ppl buying Xbox bundled with Kinect right now in the US are hardcore gamers buying it for the flood of xbox exclusives and because kinect is awsome?

The point is that the right type of games, games that non-dedicated devices cannot adequately replicate, the storm of non-dedicated devices can be weathered as it has been weathered since gaming antiquity. If they fail, it will be because they stop making those kinds of games.

It's the Nintendo story applied to the industry as a whole.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I have to agree with Pachter. I wouldn't say all of casual gamers will won't buy a new system but they'll be wary. People who would have never bought a system got one and after a while they probably got buyer's remorse. They already know what it's like to be a "gamer" and now they won't be so quickly to jump into this new experience.

I bought a fairly early in it's lifetime because my pals kept saying how awesome it is. I enjoyed it for a short time and played about 3 games on it but grew tired of it. Now that the PSVita is out I have no intention of buying it. I've already been down that road.

My sister is the definition of casual gamer. She had a ds and wii but her library only consisted of Harvest moon, Mario, wii fit, just dance and the like. Last year she sold her ds and wii and now she only plays with her smart phone. I remember the old days when she'd get excited to play the next Mario Kart or Mario party but now she only tries to show me the next Angry birds. I tried to show her the 3ds but to no avail. Even the new tablet in the wiiu wasn't enough to make her curious about the next generation.

Part of me wants to say "good riddance".

so casual gamers who bought a wii or xbox kinect to play with family or friends in front of the tv won't do it anymore and instead of buying a wii they will play with an ipad in the living room together with friends and kids? sounds legit... sure there will be some who won't buy a console anymore but ALL casual gamers? common!

Yea my Grandma had a Wii, now she just texts on her iPhone and plays Fruit Ninja all day.

You might lose some 13 - 18 year old girls, but really, if you make the right product, the soccer moms will come.

I wonder what degree of casual gamers he's referring to. Mario gamers or Call of Duty gamers?

SMH /facepalm

There are many different types of casual gamers. The ones that play Facebook games, those are the cheap ones who don't have money to buy a console or an iPod/iPad.

The ones that play only Call of Duty and FIFA/Madden, those are the ones who enjoy video games, but it's not their life.

There is still a huge market for casuals. Ever heard of Kinect?
The only reason iPads are selling so well right now, while the video game industry is declining, its because we haven't had new consoles in almost a decade, while we get a new iPad every year.

Once Wii U comes out, the industry will come back to life. Once PS4 and 720 are out, the industry will see huge growth. Free To Play(a huge part of why mobile gaming is so popular) will be a huge feature of next-gen consoles.
