(Reuters) - Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp are in talks to jointly produce large OEL (organic electroluminescence) televisions, the Nikkei business daily said.

The collaboration would mark the first time that the two rivals join hands in a core business, the paper said.

The companies, which aim to commercialize OEL TVs by fiscal 2015, are joining hands in hopes of shortening the development time by sharing technologies, according to the Nikkei.

OEL displays, which consume less power and offer sharper images, are widely seen replacing LCDs as the dominant technology in TVs and other devices, the paper said.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics plan to release 55-inch OEL TVs this year, according to the Nikkei.

I love Panny tvs, I love Sony tvs. If true, these 2 great companies can make the best tv possible. Not before 2015 tough, just around the time when I'll start replacing my current Plasma.

This could be a good idea, Sony needs to catch up with Sammy and doing a JV can speed their tv's to market as well as reduce capital costs. I just hope that Panasonic plays nice...

Two desperate companies in huge trouble trying to survive against the forces of Samsung, LG, Chinese TV makers and the soon upcoming Apple TV.

Personally what irritates me is that Sony and Panasonic TVs have ugly and old-fashioned design while LG:s look slick and Samsungs are design masterpieces.

Yeah... I'll stick to brands like Samsung and LG which are garantueed quality for a good price while bringing new technologies to market fast.

Yea with samsung we could have the tech this year. WHy wait until 2015 if you did want it? This will be a late show.
