Forums - Microsoft - 343 Industries: Halo can support more games but can't saturate the market

Examiner

343 Industries Frank O'Connor talks about the possibility of expanding the Halo universe to other genres in an interview released on Thursday.

The Halo universe has already been expanded once with the real-time strategy game, Halo Wars, from the now defunct Ensemble Studios. The game turned into one of the best-selling RTS games on consoles but it's not something that O'Connor and 343 Industries are exploring at the moment.

"It's not something were working on right now," O'Connor told Game Informer. "But the universe can support these different experiences. Anything from the Waypoint experience on the console to the novels and comic books and stuff."

"I think the Halo universe can support more games, we just have to be careful not to oversaturate at least the console part of the market."

O'Connor goes on to say that 343 Industries focus remains on the "sequential games" like Halo 4 but "there's room for new and different types of Halo experiences. It could be something small like the Warthog in Forza and who knows in the future, it could be something bigger and more ambitious."

Halo 4 releases to the Xbox 360 on November 6.

Prediction: Halo Karting and Halo: Finish the Brawl are already in the making.

What about 2D Halo?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I never understood what happened with Ensemble Studios, Halo Wars was a really good console RTS. I'd have preferred it on PC, but it worked very well on a console. The Halo Universe could easily have been expanded into more of that genre with Ensemble at the helm, instead the studio got shut down. Real shame.

I share the feeling. The way the game was build made the control scheme work very well, but while I did enjoy the game I did feel it was lacking in some areas. Bungie made a great effort to design stunning and spectacular environments and this wasn't replicated properly in Halo Wars, with the exception of the cutscence. The maps felt small and had a rather shaby look to them. Another thing were the UNSC/Covenant bases and the uninspiring look of the vehicles. It always bugged me how they bases were built, massive shafts suddenly appeared under newly constructed bases and building just suddenly appeared. I also never liked how the Covenant bases just appeared, and I didn't buy the implied idea that it teleported to its location.

They are amongst a list of things that I would really like to see addressed in a potential sequel.

I thought Halo Wars was superb. A bit skeptical and I do enjoy an occasional RTS, but it was great for a console game, and the control schematic was well adapted, shame Ensemble got shut down, but hopefully an RTS would be good, a dancing game would totally rape my Halo experience.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.
