Forums - Sales Discussion - April 2012 NPD 360 HW 236k, PS3 175k, Wii 91k

On the issue of pricing, I would note that the average price of the Xbox 360 had been declining from about $300 in January to just below $260 in March. In April, with the introduction of the $450 Kinect Star Wars hardware bundle, the average price jumped up to $325, according to data provided to me by the NPD Group. Based on last month's average price, it seems likely to me that 70,000 to 80,000 units of the Kinect Star Wars bundle were sold during April.

The average price of the PS3 in April dropped again, this time to $262, which I believe should be a record low. Without the addition of the Kinect Star Wars sales, I think that the Xbox 360 and PS3 could nearly have been tied for hardware sales in April.

so April:

NPD:

360 236k
PS3 175k
Wii 91k

VGC pre slight adjustments:

360 290k 22% over (54k)
PS3 223k 27% over (48k)
Wii 130k 43% over (39k)

So yet another month where the 360 has been overtracked more than the ps3, thanks for pointing that out. :)

That makes it nine months in a row now this has happened in america.

woop de doo

O wow, really?

um....360 sells a lot in America, obviously it will be overtracked there a lot more.

PS3 for eg would be overtracked a lot more than 360 in Europe.

Not really, if a console sells a lot then you could argue that the margin for error in terms of actual numbers could be higher, however that would also mean that there would be several months of undertracking the console in comparison to the competition as well as several months of overtracking.

That's not how tracking usually works. From my experience of vgc, consoles get overtracked in regions where they sell the most. This is also a good reason why wii is usually the most overtracked in a lot of instances, because it is so popular I am guessing tracking it gets difficult.

So long as adjustments are made why does it matter?

The point being that when one console is consistently overtracked compared to another 1) There is obviously a problem with the data/formulas used to work out the sales in the first place and 2) Having a group of posters on this site constantly post pro MS stuff, cherry picking data, trying to make it seem as if the 360 is hard done by compared to the ps3 when in reality it is the other way round is not okay.

You either havent been here very long or you are ignoring what really goes on.

I've been here from the start, that's exactly what happens, prove me wrong.

Don't even respond to him, his agenda is quite clear.  He'll soon get bored when everyone ignores his posts.

I agree. It has caught my attention that 360 is overtracked way more then PS3, PS3 is undertracked or slightly overtracked most of the time. Last december we saw a major gigantic +-1.5million adjustment for the 360.
