Forums - Gaming - HP/SP

On topic, though: the HP/SP system has become ubiquitous simply because it's the simplest way to make an RPG without getting into heavy number-crunching, and it applies easily to nearly every RPG in existence, from cutesy action-RPGs like Paper Mario to deep dungeon-crawlers like the Shin Megami Tensei games.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

HP - Life points, health points, etc...

SP - Spell point, magic points, etc...

The the formula above has been tried and true in RPG. But, can't there be something new and fresh? Are devs too afraid to try something totally different?

There's no problem with HP/SP formula, but it's so common...

Anything that lacks those elements is normally called something other than a RPG is the problem. The genre seems bound to the system because no game that strays away from it is called a RPG.

@ Game_boy: Mario had/has "emotional dimension" in the first place? News to me. Also, most of the locations in Paper Mario were original, and those that weren't (say, Dry Dry Desert) were given a new look befitting an RPG.

Finally, Paper Mario's combat kicks the ass of most other PS1/N64-generation JRPGs.

Oh, and you forgot Badge Points and the Star Meter. =P

I love Paper Mario (not SPM). I just wish they did something more with the systems they have.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

HP and MP are fine, but I really like the Alchemy system in Secret of Evermore.
