I still like the first one the most, but when I get the HD collection that could all change. MGS3 is a masterpiece, especially the environments, they are so beautiful, expansive, immersive and varied, I can't wait until I get the HD collection.

Expansive?

For a Metal Gear game, yes. For any other, god no.

I prefer remakes on handhelds (as they hold up better on the smaller screen and portability is a huge plus) so I wasn't sure which version to get. When I played the demo of the 3DS version it felt like a let down from Metal Gear Solid 4 but I recently purchased Peace Walker for the PSP and last week I replayed the 3DS demo - and had a blast playing it. It's definitely a step up, graphics wise, from Peace Walker. And they refined the game as well (crouch walking, map on the bottom screen, better controls than on PSP...)

Long story short: I'll buy the 3DS version pretty soon. Just have to finish Peace Walker first. Anyone played the 3DS version and enjoyed it? I'd go for the HD Collection but I really want this game on a portable device.

Only if you can find a circle pad pro for the 3DS version. Otherwise you'll have the same controls as the PSP MGS games where you use the right face buttons as a D pad for camera control. If you're okay with that, it's fine without the circle pad pro.

For me, that whole face button/D pad control scheme pretty much wrecked every MGS game on the PSP.

Hell yeah @ the bolded. The 3ds version is by far the worst version of the best game in the series. I was actually going to get the the circle pad but its 50 bucks!!! I think ill just wait for the Vita version for a better bargain if I want it portable.

I actually think the 3DS version is the best version. You get a cool touch screen slider (klike Uncharted on the Vita) for aiming your sniper rifle, you can choose items and weapons much faster due to some slick menus, Snake can crouch walk like in MGS4 and Peacewalker, you can make your own camo, and w/ a CPP, the dual analog is excellent. The 3D is very good, too.

The only downside it that there's two cutscenes that are pre-4ecorded so the detail is grainy. There's a couple of areas where the game slows down, too--just like the PS2 version, though. I'll grab the Vita version (mostly for MGS2) but I hope it brings a few easter eggs like thhe 3DS version. It could be the best version, ever.

I played the demo and wasnt impressed, i never really cared about the camo. Maybe the Vita version will be better, I heard they were adding some touchscreen stuff for is specifically, but even then I have a rule about buying a game more than twice, despite how good it is.

MGS3 is the best game in the series by a mile.

I didn't like the demo either when I played it first. But after giving it a second try it felt rather nice. And for some reason I don't need a CCP (just replayed it again)... was the same for Resident Evil: Revelations for me - I'm a weird person, I guess. And as d21lewis wrote: The 3DS version is an actual remake with actual improvements (while the Vita version will be more of a straight port I think).

I think it's my least favorite game. It's the only one I never bothered 2 complete. I think I remember getting inside some military buliding, then I just stop playing. really did'nt like the enviroments. Personally, the PS1 game was my all time favorite. That game made a big impression on me,back in the day.

Just wait.  That will change soon.  Right after Volgin grabs your balls, the game switches into high gear.

I started (re)playing this game on the 3DS yesterday. The 3D is great, so far! But I'm almost speed running it, as I just keep thinking about...
