Forums - Microsoft - Is Microsoft Already Manufacturing the Next Xbox?

I'm sorry but no, if they are making consoles in Texas, they are probably dev kits to be sent to 3rd parties.

What rumors said last year was that some developers (EA) had PCs with the intended hardware specs of the nextbox. But those where PCs with of the shelf hardware. What they can be making now are the dev kits with near final specs to be sent to as many 3rd parties as possible to prepare games for the console's launch in 2013.

Let's face it, there's no chance that Microsoft (neither Sony nor Nintendo) will mass produce an electronic device outside of China. It would be too expensive.

No, the rumors in dec specifically stated final dev kits were being produced. Not PC shells. However, it is just as plausible that rumors were wrong and this is the final dev kit finally being produced for everyone.

If they are manufacturing the console that points to it being released this year. And that is a big if. The question is if they think they can sustain momentum for the 360 after the Wii U comes out. I'm not going to say it not going to happen. And if they do it may be a worse case senero for Sony, because it can potenially kill their sales growth if both competitors have the "next best thing" out. But only E3 will tell.

Yep, you're right:

"Ubisoft Montreal is hard at work on 'target boxes' based on the intended specifications of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor, according to an Edge source. Delivery of the first iteration of genuine devkits, running custom hardware, is expected to reach studios before Christmas, and all signs point to the finalised console arriving at retail in late 2012."

My memory isn't as good as it was.

Still I don't think these consoles are "real" consoles. I still think that mass production will be made in China, not in USA, simply because the manufacturing costs. It makes little sense (from a business point of view) to do it otherwise.

Please excuse my bad English.

Well, they could make a small number in Texas for testing and what not and then turn on full production in China. I.e. this could just be a really small run of a few thousand or so machines for use internally at MS.

And I agree.

But using them internally is another way to say "being build for test purposes". And Microsoft must do it right this time. Until they have done it they won't know if the cooling is enough (for example). And after that comes the mass production of the console and get enough stock to meet some of the initial demand.

We're already in May, will they have enough time to do all that (and more) until Christmas?

If we don't at least see a teaser for the next-box Ill be a little bummed out. At least just openly confirm its coming that way we have some idea of a time frame for it. Don't get me wrong this year is more than stacked enough for me to enjoy my 360 and PS3 but I'm beginning to really want a next-gen box..........

Quoting your post is easier than writing it all myself, so: This.

yes.

cheap 360's announced at e3 and an announcement of the nextbox before the end of 2012.

That will never happen because of the Osborne Effect.

You won't hear about the next Xbox before E3 2013.

Few things.

Last Dec/Jan we had rumors stating xbox dev kits were finalized. If true there is no reason to be building it, again, now.

Previously we also had rumors that MS intends to launch this holiday along with Wii U. (reason for my bet with Jay520)

MS didn't say they would NOT be showing neXtBox at E3, just that they had no intention of discussing it yet.... yet was a couple months ago, no mention of E3. Their E3 quote also was not firm but more of a maybe. People just take it too literally. Plus, if they want the surprise factor on Sony and Nintendo.... why the hell would they say anything different.

I think this is as a very plausible rumor with final hardware being produced for launch this holiday. Considering my bet... I'm going to run with it. :)

Side note, MS and Sony are definitely showing next gen at this E3... just accept that as fact. Too many MS rumors of Durango and Sony specifically stating they plan on beating MS to market. Its going to happen.

Wow you have really stuck through with your prediction of the next gen consoles being revealed this year despite all odds and majority being against you, for that you have my respect. I hope that they do show something but things are looking rather grim in that regard.
