Forums - Nintendo - Growing doubts over Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console

God, these articles...

*shakes head*

The amount of NDAs and embargos surrounding WiiU are through the roof, yet this article predicts an uncertain future based on knowing very little about the specifics of the system or Nintendo's strategy.

It's like a kid claiming that Christmas is going to suck when they have no idea yet what they'll find under the tree.

I have doubts over the Wii U achieving success, at least anywhere near Wii success, but what I don't have doubts about is Nintendo continuing to make quality games that I enjoy. While I'm not completely sold on the tablet, that won't make a difference to me as long as the games are great. And actually, I do think certain genres such as RPGs, RTS, etc, would work great with the tablet control.

Sales wise, I haven't really seen the same qualities the Wii had that brought a mass market audience. Nintendo seems to be going back to the Sony and MS style of games they went with on the N64 and Gamecube, which could alienate their Wii userbase. But at the same time, I think those lost mass market gamers will be somewhat offset by an addition of more core gamers and better third party support.

Again, this is like 2005 all over again...

We know next to nothing about the WiiU, I.E its launch date, the launch games, the price, the graphical power, the dev support, the online etc.

People need to stop overreacting. I'm fairly certain people are just waiting for Nintendo to fail...

And how was the 3DS launch grim? If the 3DS had a poor first year, what hope is there for the Vita...

True, people just love to hate Nintendo. I wish peeople would just chill and enjoy the games. The simple fact is that Nintendo is the hardest working company in nvideogames and thus t will make the WiiU a success. So people just chill.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

No matter which way you slice it, the Wii was an absolute home run for Nintendo.

No. It failed on appealing to the 3rd party devs and had poor 3rd party support. HD twins take this one.

The system brought a new section of the population into the gamer fold and its now familiar motion controls created quite a stir amongst the video game community.

Which just so happened to die in 2011.

So with its successor poised for a release later this year, you'd think anticipation would be at a fever pitch — but it isn't.

Are you serious? If Wii U rumors are making people THIS excited for a console launch, what makes you so sure someone isn't going to die when the Wii U gets a 2nd revealing at E3 2012?

In the weeks leading up to the 2011 E3 video game expo in Los Angeles, Nintendo hinted that their new console would finally satisfy those who identify as "core" gamers. Core gamers are the players who ensure each new iteration of Call of Duty and Madden continue to break records, and Nintendo completely lost touch with them after introducing the much more casual-focused Wii.

Yes, and core gamers also buy 30 million copies of Mario Kart Wii, millions of copies of NSMB Wii, and millions of copies of other various Nintendo games.

The reveal of the Wii U during the conference did little to excite that very vocal segment of the market.

Agreed. The reveal wasn't a true reveal.

And while gameplay teasers of titles like Battlefield, Darksiders, and Ninja Gaiden seemed impressive, it was soon revealed that the games were not yet running on Nintendo's new hardware, so it's impossible to tell how the ported titles will look or control.

Agreed. The reveal wasn't a true reveal.

Nintendo's seemingly unshakable habit of rehashing games and characters from bygone eras doesn't appear to be slowing down with the Wii U. Both the Mario and the Pikmin franchise have already been confirmed for the system, and if we were betting on it, we'd put money on there being Zelda, Super Smash Brothers, and Mario Party titles in the Wii U's future as well. Unfortunately, that may not be enough to get seasoned gamers to plop down another $250 or more on a console whose predecessor had little to no third-party support to speak of.

Really? Was this one a joke? Seasoned gamers having been buying these games for over 25 years. While I understand you may be talking specifically about the gamers on copetitors consoles, all I can say is, you are making rash predictions, (because we know little to nothing about Wii U's schedule).

A recent trailer for the Wii U version of Ubisoft's Rayman Origins shows off some Wii U-exclusive features, including the ability to use the tablet controller to manipulate objects within the game world as other players make their way through. It looked like a neat feature, but the fact that the video showed just one player using the new tablet controller — while the rest of the players were left with what looks like standard Wii remotes — gave social network users plenty to groan about.

This I agree with. Nintendo should make the system 4 tablet compatible.

Nintendo appears to be banking on a boost in graphical power — seemingly on par with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 —

Let me stop you right here. On par with Playstation 3 and 360? What are you looking at an official spec sheet or something? If you have concluded that the Wii U is using 6 year old technology because you are agreeing with some rumors, take into consideration what kind of market this is.

and the abilities of the new tablet controller to wow consumers. Unfortunately, many seem decidedly un-wowed at this point,

WHAT? Are you kidding me? Who is telling you these things?

and it's unclear if the company has a plan to win back the core segment,

WHAT?

or if they will simply rely on the Wii's popularity to make the Wii U a must-have product.

WHAT?

The company's newest earnings report showed its first annual loss in 30 years, which was fueled by dwindling Wii sales

But you said the Wii was a home run for Nintendo...

and rather grim launch figures of the new 3DS handheld. If Nintendo hopes to avoid a similar debut for its Wii U console, the company may need to make a drastic change,

though it remains unclear if they are ready to do so.

Is it unclear perhaps because you are not paying attention, or because E3 2012 is not here yet?

this kind of post was worth posting sometime right after the 2011 conference when everyone was confused. Now, there is actually enough information to where us Nintendo fans know nintendo's plan. It's something not worth worrying about, seeing how they've stepped up their game and have already said they would focus on the core gamer first.

Just wanted to point out that the statement was that it "was an absolute home run for Nintendo."  And it was.   It didn't say it was a home run for 3rd parties.

The fact remains that the first year sales were higher than any other console in history.

And Nintendo lost money.

The Sega Saturn would have been the highest selling console in history if it was $1 too.

Nintendo lost money because they are poring MASSIVE ammounts of resources into development of new technology, all the while selling 3DS at a slight loss.  At this moment, 3DS is selling at a profit, Wii U will not sell at a loss unless Ninty has a TON of software ready to go.  I wouldn't worry about Ninty, they have massive cash reserves and will be fine unless Wii U becomes  the next Virtual Boy.

No, 3DS is still selling at a loss. They expect the crossover point to be August, and they expect to be in the red next quarter too.

Why would Nintendo be spending much on R&D? Wii U was ready to go minus the final component versions at E3, all the money spent on developing the expensive parts (CPU, GPU, Tablet) would already have been spent by then. If anything this should be a quiet period in Nintendo's R&D, they just finished lauching the 3DS's main software and an expensive home Zelda.

I'm not worried about Nintendo, their cash position is good. But if they continue to be in the red, investors will want a change of direction or a change of management. And I personally want that to happen as soon as possible, because the current direction isn't producing any games I want to play (own only 1 3DS game and will not buy Wii U, compare to 100+ Nintendo games and 8 Nintendo consoles I own).
