I think the point most in disbelief about the sales potential of this game aren't thinking about is that Sony is marketing it for the holiday season. They are aiming at everyone from casuals to PS3 owners.

Come casual gamers and buy this game which is based around a bunch of characters from hardcore franchises you probably haven't played?

Isn't that the point of having a large and vaired character roster?

Ok sure, not even some of the most die hard Playstation fans may be able to recall every character in the game, but I'm sure even the most light hearted of Sony gamers will recognise one or two of the characters on the front cover.

for just one or 2? It will NEED that most of the roster to be pretty recognizable for them to care, that's how the smash franchise pull it out. The first smash had pretty recognizable face with the exception of Ness and maybe C.Falcon(2/10) in melee it was like 8 characters that people might have been wondering about (8/25) in brawl probably was 12-13 (13/35).  Almost all the tim 2/3 of the roster are very popular faces. Add to this that the difference in popularity between west and east respect sony's ips, and you have quite a challenge there to attract anyone else that isnt a real sonyfan. This where 3rd parties come in hand, but i doubt they will have a real meaningful effect if there isnt a lot of fanservice for them.

it only takes one character for a more casual gamer to give it a look in the shops, sure they probably won't buy it, but maybe 1 in every 5 of them will.

And don't worry, few of us knew who Ness was when Smash 64 came out, even less Marth, Roy or Mr. G&W when Melee released.

To be fair though, it will be much worse with PABR, but that makes it that much more of an exciting surprise in my view.

Except like everyone in Japan knew who those characters were.  They were there for the japanes audience.

1 out of 8 maybe, it will need to be a really blind and hardore fan of the character alone to buy a game for seen you favorite character doing something totally different form what you like about it.

Yes,  that would be the point of it... so far it doesn't really seem that varied though... it all seems like games that mostly all would be bought by the same hardcore audience,   with a few old forgotten characters.

To do big numbers you need a few main stream game characters from some HUGE selling IPs.  I question the ability of a few 1-3 million games to seal the deal.  All you get with that is Capcom VS.

Though argueably worse then that since Capcom is known for fighter games, and they knew people who liked fighting games would want to play a game series full of their favorite fighting game characters (plus extras like megaman.)

Crossover games typically don't outpreform their most successful tie in.

Seriously? Who doesn't know about Cloud and Sephiroth at this point?

Honestly, if it wasn't for this thread, I would know who they were. FFVII isn't really that popular these days for the mainstream.

Okay....
Cloud/Sephiroth + 1 million
Kratos +1 million
Snake old/naked +1 million
Nathan Drake + 1 million
sackboy + 1 million
Sweet Tooth + 500K
Ratchet and Clank +500K
Crash+500K
Spyro+250K
Other (FF, RE, Kingdom hearts, Tony Hawk, Gran turismo car...etc) +500K
Total: 7.25 million....makes sense.

Doesn't that assume that nobody is a fan of more than one of these series?

And who do you think wants to see Snake old and naked?

I went to Japan a couple years ago.  FFVII was on its own shelf.

I am sure he meant old Snake and or naked Snake the Protagonist from Metal Gear Solid 3

not sure if sarcastic but if not...

FFVII is just as big now as it always was. There's sequels, prequels, an anime, many movie and if there was an hd remake of the game the whole fucking internet would get flipped over.
