Errr, what were we talking about then?

Explained in the post that starts with  "I'm not saying they shouldn't monetize their service at all" .  Please read it.

(Oh, and we do know how well Steam is doing: astronomically. Google 'steam sales 100%' and you'll see for yourself.)

Eh. But you're still arguing that other companies aren't monetizing their services, therefore Microsoft is "unnecessarily" monetizing their services, which implies: you shouldn't monetize your service.

You say stuff, but you're ultimately just complaining about Microsoft trying to make money through ads.

I wish people would understand what this is.

It's an ad platform which developers can choose to implement into their apps. Instead of running their own ad services, they can use this one, which has much more extensive knowledge about the user (as it knows the user's activity across the entire Xbox platform, and any other services which you use your gamertag on (Zune, GFW, WP7)), and, as such, can deliver much better ads targeted towards you.

Apple have a similar scheme on the iPhone.

This is just insulting now, it's the third time you've ignored what I said.

You seem to purposefully ignore both the key distinctions in my argument and the facts I put forward to support them , it's not very fun debating with that kind of person, nor do I wish to continue it.

You made a blanket statement that companies need to monetize digital distribution services as much as possible to survive, this is disproved by steam among others, it's that simple.

Nope. I'm arguing monetization is necessary for survival, AND firms should monetize services to maximize profit and shareholder value. Maximize all profits.

btw how is the new Metro interface of Xbox? I heard it contained a lot of ads.

Unless you mean 1 picture ad showing you a game on xbox, or a new app then you would be wrong.

Adverts were telling me to listen to One Direction, they will never be forgiven, metro sucks.

Really?, i never got anything like that. All i get is a picture that shows a game or an app with no sound.

Not on the home tab, but on the others.

Microsoft @E3 2012: Platinum accounts announced! For only 120 $ a year you will have no ads :).

If something like that becomes commonplace it will make me very annoyed. Everytime I use YouTube on my parents laptop (without NoScript) I get so irritated at all the ads that play before or even in the middle of the videos.
