Do you guys think NSMB2 will chop off Super Mario 3D Lands legs?

It's gonna be interesting to see the effect

I think it will.  I think you'll see a big impact during the holiday season.  Most people who buy a 3DS will buy it with a Mario game, and most are going to choose one or the other.  From a business perspective I would have waited till the next holiday season.  From a personal experience I can't wait for some new Mario.

I'm also surprised that Mario is coming out in August.  You'd think that Nintendo would want to use it as their big holiday title.  This makes me hopeful that they're going to bring out some truly huge title for the holidays, but what franchise do they have that's bigger than 2-D Mario?  Maybe they have an amazing new IP and they don't want Mario stealing the spotlight?

My only other thought is that the 3DS is going to be a little downplayed this holiday as Nintendo tries to put more emphasis on the Wii U.  Nintendo might try this stratergy if they don't feel very threatened by the Vita, which they likely don't.

There's no way another huge franchise will be on 3DS for the holidays in Japan, that would be over-overkill (we're already looking at a overkill scenario here)... Animal Crossing a little early (like october) and then my guess is that Nintendo will let MH4 steal the show in the really big holidays weeks.

Okay, so 3DS is gonna be huge this Year.

The question running through my mind is this - If 3DS is getting NSMB2, what will WiiU have on launch? Will they release 2 2D Mario games within 3 Months of eachother? WiiU needs a strong lineup and I thought they'd have had Mario on launch.

I'd assume they drop an NSMB for the Wii U holiday 2013 or 2014

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Good to see masters of innovation bringing another new IP

oh be fair, nintendo did well to only develop 4 mario games for the 3ds within a year.

Why people think  3D Mario, Mario Kart, 2D Mario and Paper Mario (assuming this is the 4th title you speak of) is the same IP? You get very different experiences from all of them. As a DS owner only, it's been since 2006 I haven't got a 2D Mario.

actually i had completely forgotten that one... i was referring to mario tennis.

so do you think little big planet and little big planet karting are not the same IP?  cause that sounds pretty wrong to me.  how about ratchet and clank vs. ratchet and clank all 4 one -- quite different experiences afterall.

This is such great news. It was expected of course, but I love the "New" series and this one looks promising so I can't wait to have it in my hands in August. Wow... 3DS is off for a great start.

Definitely not the same IPs. I've never played those, but if they're as dfferent as you say they shoud be considered different ips too, why not?

Depends on how the world sees them, I suppose, and in the case of ratchet and clank I believe the world sees them both as 3D plattformers, so they're stuck in the same genre, and therefore are more compared between them. It's very different than the Mario situation, where there's a 2D platformer, 3D platformer, Racer, RPG and Sports game.

LBP Kart and LBP are most definitely not the same IP, imo.

Nice. This is what I like to hear!

With this, Monster Hunter, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem and more, it could be a VERY nice (and expensive!) remainder of 2012 for 3DS owners!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

and i say that despite the clearly different game play, the way the world sees them is all mario.  there is a reason nintendo puts mario in the titles of each.  that's the IP that customers are identifying with and using to make purchase decisions.  the word mario does more to describe the game play of each of those games then the genre itself.

think of it like this.  halo megabloks vs. halo.  clearly far more distinguishes these two products than the mario games you listed but it's still the halo IP that is being used to sell.

sigh....wheres super mario bros 4,5? the 'New' series graphics are boring, and so are the gameplay mechanics. ugh :

Uh, looks exactly like NSMBWii, but worse. At least squirrel Mario is back. Someone is getting desperate at Nintendo I think. I see this releasing this year and then after the holiday season they'll announce 3DS Lite.

I dont think so.
