I've put well over 1000 hours into various Pokemon versions :p

~400 Blue+Yellow
~500 Gold+Crystal
~200 Sapphire
~150 Diamond
~150 Black

That's my whole poinr. You would think that everyone on a gaming forum at least played a single Pokemon game at somepoint in their life.

Playing Blue or Red alone will give you most of the background.
Watching the first anime series would have made you develop a crush on Misty during your teen years then realizing you still have a crush on her after you're in your 20s then noticing that technically makes you a pedo ... wait, I'm getting off topic.

Squirtle is a very fine choice, since he is also very well-known.

However, Squirtle for Mafia might not be too bad of a choice either, as you said, they were troublemakers, and they have badass glasses.

So how many pokemon are there currently out there^^
