Forums - Nintendo - Recommend some great DS games for me!

I noticed you enjoy turn based strategy RPG's. I mean Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea are all games of this genre, and you ordered copies of them.

So to expand upon this genre I would recommend:

*Front Mission - This is actually a SNES port, but it's a damn good one. It's very similar to Fire Emblem (Fire Emblem for DS is actually a NES remake), in the sense that you control a party, characters have unique abilities, can equip multiple different items, involves strategizing to take down bosses and units can die. However in Front Mission, when characters die, you can still use them in future missions, you just get a cash reward penalty cost. So this game isn't as tough on you, but at the same time levels in the game are harder and require more thinking, and double checking ranges Also equiping characters (or in this game Wanzer mobile suits) is far more expansive. In fact selective what type of Wanzer you want your character to specialize in (Melee, Short Range Rifles-SMG/Shotgun, Long Range Rifles-Multishot/Singleshot/Bazooka, Long Rang Rockets, or a mix of any of these) takes almost as long as the missions since all your equipment becomes obsolete after 2-3 missions, and because different units specialize in different abilities. Many of the characters are as interesting as the ones in Fire Emblem, and dialogue is carried out in the same way, but the camera angle in battle is more similar to the one is Disgaea (on an angle, with 3D sprites).

It's a great franchise, and like Fire Emblem, it's roots are old and simple, but at the same time the game mechanics are relatively unchanged.

*Advance Wars - specifically Dual Strike, although both are good. This game is a bit different from the 3 you mentioned, but I can't picture any fan of Fire Emblem not being a fan of this franchise. You only control one character per level, sometimes you pick who, often you don't. You have to build an army using bases and captivating other bases and cities. It's not complicated, and loosing units doesn't cost you anything except a weakening in your defences. Like Fire Emblem and the other 2 games you mentioned, plus Front Mission above, this game is heavily focuses on strategy, and it incorporates a lot of the game mechanics of Fire Emblem (Fog of War, Abilities which boost power, etc). Also there is a lot of replay value in this game. If you want to get 100% completion, I reckon it would take at least 150 hours to fully complete this game, but only 30 hours if you want to beat the campaign mode once (but there are other modes).

Suikoden Terikias is also a turn based strategy JRPG, which got great ratings, but I haven't played it yet. I own a copy and it's on my to do list before I get a 3DS, but I can only suggest checking it out for now.

Age of Empires is also pretty good, but not the same level as Fire Emblem, Front Mission, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Advance Wars (I put Disgaea below these in terms of quality, at least on the DS). Only get it if you beat all the games I suggested above, and really have a thing for this genre, otherwise forget it.

Now some odd balls, games which I really like, but I dunno you would. Metroid Prime Hunters/Pinball, Pokemon Black/HeartGold, Dragon Quest, Super Mario 64 DS Valkyrie Chronicles, Radiant Historia, Chrono Trigger and Golden Sun.

P.S. Quote me or message me what you think of my main two recommendations. I'm curious to know what you think about them.

P.P.S. If Fire Embelm (GBA), Fire Emblem: the Sacred Stones, either Golden Sun (GBA) or Metroid Fusion is available for download over 3DS Virtual console, I strongly recommend downloading them, or buying a used GBA SP (backward compatible with every GB/GBC game and basically every handheld Nintendo game before it) to play them. A GBA SP sells for $40-$60 nowdays, and if you got it you could play any Nintendo handheld game. I would also recommend picking up Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) if you like A2 as it's better, and I would argue as good as the PS1/PSP iteration. Also if you venture into the world of GBA, pick up Tactics Ogre, and look into Onimusha Tactics. Tacitcs Ogre is excellent, but I dunno about Onimusha. I can vouch that the PS2 Onimusha's are great, but yea.

I could actually recommend a good bunch of Gameboy games, I particularly feel the GBA offered the most for the RPG enthusiast out of all of Nintendo's handhelds.

I know a lot about this genre, it's my favorite for handheld gaming.

Fire Emblem for GBA is much better then the ones available for Consoles and DS, and same goes for Golden Sun. Metroid Fusion however is just an excellent handheld title, and something I would consider a must have. Advance Wars for GBA are also excellent, but the DS version is the best of the 4, so don't go out of your way for these.
