star wars return of the jedi.. thats the only game i can remember that i tried so hard but couldnt beat.. i was about 10 years old..

 Yes, I have beaten Contra without losing a life (multiple times). Battletoads I really never played. Contra 4 is the hardest game I have ever played.

What? No way! My friend, you need to come and visit my website (link in signature). I will teach you how to play Civ4; I can handle Emperor easily, and Immortal with difficulty. Now, if you had said Deity, on the other hand...

On topic, Contra isn't that hard (like many, I've done it without dying). Neither is Punch Out, if you grew up in the 1980s and had endless hours to memorize the patterns. Now Ninja Gaiden is hard, Ghosts and Goblins is hard, and Battletoads is HARD. I played that game for months, and I never got even close to beating it.

FYI, in my experience the hardest Fire Emblem was Fire Emblem Gaiden (FE2). Try doing that game without cheezy power-leveling, then tell me that Radiant Dawn is a hard game!

Dragon's Lair, nes, no quesition, there will be suffering in extrodinary quantities
and almost anything on the master system, it's as if every game's difficulty has been cranked up to 11, seriously that system's games are nuts... ... except ninja gaiden 

 donkey kong at the arcade seriously I'd like to see any of the modern so called "hardcore" gamer last over a minute on that, and DK jr is even harder

Hardest game I played through is XWing. Some of the missions were hard as hell.

when you r a litle kid there comes this magic day when you finish batletoads with 1 lives left...
or ninja gaiden 1, with 1 hit left to comeback to the begining of the imposible last level.

good memories :D.
